SENIORS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 21-16-142 def LILYDALE 17-9-111
A day of upsets with Scoresby remaining undefeated against Noble Park and Norwood’s stunning win over Balwyn. At Vermont overnight rain held off for the game. One change with Webster replacing the injured Cullen.
Right from the start it was obvious it wasn’t going to be easy. Froud got the punters off to a good start with our first goal. It was goal for goal with Siciliano booting our second. Mullett and Henley were good early with McLure getting first use of the ball. Henley goaled via Kelly then Mullett goaled via Henley. Papillo’s tackling again was an example to all. When Spriggs goaled on the siren we led by 9 points at the first change 5-3 to 4-0.
Lilydale hit the front with 2 early goals in the 2nd term. Spriggs got his second with a brilliant snap over his shoulder. Siciliano kicked his second then Greig got his first for the day via Bardon and McInerney. Millhouse anf Rushton were good down back and Bardon was getting plenty of the ball. At ½ time we led 8-7 to 7-4. Better players for the half were Mullett, Henley, Papillo, Bardon, Millhouse and Rushton.
We kicked 5-6 to 4-1 in the 3rd quarter. Greig was terrific – his forward pressure enabled Froud to goal then Greig himself goaled after his smother. Greig goaled again via Mendes. Kelly who had been quiet capitalised on a defensive mistake to kick his first. Ross who came on the ball at the 20 minute mark in the first quarter was magnificent all over the ground and kicked a late goal. At ¾ time we led by 20 points 13-13 to 11-5.
The last quarter was a shootout as we kicked 8-3 to 6-4. With the lights on we kicked the first 3 goals of the term to lead by 39 points but after that it was goal for goal. Greig kicked 4 for the quarter and Froud 3 with Bardon the other goal which came from Froud. The lethal forward pair were at their absolute best. One of Froud’s goals was a gem – a snap over his shoulder from the boundary and Greig marked infront of the Lilydale coach’s box and after getting an earful he slotted it through – he let them know it (all good fun). Finally the siren went as we posted a 31 point win,
Goalkickers – Greig 7, Froud 5, Spriggs 2, Siciliano 2 with singles to Ross, Henley, Mullett, Kelly and Bardon.

Coach’s Comments – I’m relieved to get the result. Lilydale had a few players who really had a dip. Let’s prepare for Blackburn next week.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 29-19-193 def LILYDALE 2-4-16
It was always going to be a big win against the bottom team who were struggling for numbers. We were fairly subdued in the first half. At half time we led 8-9 to 2-2. After the break we kicked 21-10 to 2 behinds. A highlight of the second half was the 10 goals kicked by Della’Quilla. Siakavelis starred again kicking 5 goals in a polished display. Mendico showed brilliant speed and used the ball well. Travis Bird played his best game in the ruck and around the ground – Jarrod also played well in defence. Jones, Cameron, Rogneda, McDonald, Geraghty and L.Johnson were all good. Frankish got 20 possessions in his 2nd comeback match.
Goalkickers – Della’Quilla 10, Siakavelis 5, Rogneda 3 with 2 each to Bordin, Quon and Humphreys with singles to Parker, McDonald, Jones, Frankish and Bull.
Coach’s Best Players – Mendico, Siakavelis, Cameron, Jones, Della’Quilla, T.Bird and Frankish.
Coach’s Comments – The first half was a grind and slog but 21 goals to nil after half time was absolutely outstanding. The supply to Della was good – everyone contributed.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 11-773 def LILYDALE 7-21-63
What a steal – we won the 1st and last quarters but they absolutely thrashed us in the other two. They say bad kicking is bad football – they should have buried us by ¾ time. In the 2nd and 3rd quarters they had all the play and kicked a total of 5-14 to 3-1. At one stage they scored 17 of the 19 scoring shots.
At ¼ time we led 4-1 to 1-3. Goals came from McCafferty, Barry-Murphy, Sonsie and Johns. Half of the quarter was played inside their 50 metres.
What happened in the next 2 quarters I have already explained. Our goals came from Rodwell, Johns and Davidson. At ¾ time their poor kicking kept us in the game as we were close enough if good enough with Lilydale 6-17 to 7-2.
In the last quarter we hit the lead when Sonsie kicked 2 quick goals. Lilydale was again back infront when they goaled from a free kick and 2 x 25 metre penalties. Sonsie kicked an emphatic goal and when Pretto goaled we had stolen 4 points from a very good side.
Goalkickers – Sonsie 4, Johns 2 and singles to Barry-Murphy, McCafferty, Rodwell, Pretto and Davidson.
Coach’s Best Players – McCafferty, Smith, Lawlor, Moss, Barry-Murphy and Mendes.
INVICTA PLAY OF THE DAY – NICK MENDES for his smother which saved a certain goal on the siren at 1/4 time.
Coach’s Comments – A famous victory – we dug deep in the last quarter. We never stopped trying - I am very proud of you.
