A week of rain has resulted in a wet ground at St Ignatius College as the Bombers take on Riverview in the under 18s.
The wet and slippery conditions have seen the Bombers take time to hit their straps, and at quarter time the Bombers held a 6-point advantage. The conditions made the game a slog, and the Riverview team were difficult opponents to shake; but after a low scoring second term in which only one goal was scored by each team the Bombers hung in there to lead by 5 points at the long break.
Riverview threw down the gauntlet in the third term, kicking the first goal to take the lead. But the Bombers immediately hit back, regaining the advantage within a minute. But they were to be the only goals of the quarter, with the conditions not conducive to quality play and forcing the match into a long battle of attrition; a battle in which the Bombers led by 6 points at the last change.
But Riverview would kick the only goal of the final quarter to take the lead. And although the Bombers threw everything at the Riverview defence in the final minutes, they were unable to regain the lead and the unbeaten run for 2010 is over.
Final score St Ignatius Riverview 5.10 (40) defeated North Shore 5.8 (38).
Our reserves travelled to Blacktown to take on UTS, and against expectations from the weather forecast the match took place in sunshine; with the surface at Blacktown in top condition despite the week's rain. But the first quarter didn't go to plan, with the well-drilled UTS senior side too good for our reserves early. The Bats kicked 4 unanswered goals in the first term and led by 26 points at quarter time. An early UTS goal in the second term extended the deficit; but after that the Bomber defence tightened. The Bats were unable for quite a while to penetrate the Bomber defence, and eventually the tide turned with two quick North Shore goals; before a UTS goal against the run of play restored the 5-goal deficit at the long break.
It was one-way traffic in the third quarter. UTS's team would beat some Premier Division teams, and our reserves struggled to keep up. The Bats ran in 6 unanswered goals to trail by 68 points at three-quarter time. And although the Bombers kept trying to the end they were unable to keep up with the Bats and the final margin was 77 points.
Final Score - UTS 15.16 (106) defeated North Shore 4.5 (29)
The seniors took on Campbelltown at Blacktown, and it was a solid start to the match. The Bombers were clearly superior around the ground, and presented options up forward to kick the only four goals of the quarter and lead by 23 points at quarter time. The second quarter was a high-scoring shootout - open and free-flowing football. But whatever the Blues tried to throw up, the Bombers had the answers, kicking 6 goals to 5 for the quarter to lead by 28 points at the long break.
The start of the third quarter was dynamite, as the Bombers kicked 4 goals in the first 6 minutes to put the game firmly in North Shore's favour. It was the start of a dynamic term where the Bombers played sensational football, and by the last change the lead had blown out to 63 points. And a high-scoring final term saw the Bombers take out a 68-point victory and maintain a share of the competition lead.
Final Score - North Shore 23.13 (151) lead Campbelltown 12.11 (83)
