SENIORS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 17-18-120 def KNOX 9-16-70
A fine cold day at Vermont with 6 changes out injured was McCarthy and dropped were Dore, Cameron, Rogneda, Henderson and L.Johnson. In came Nummy, Henley, Mendes, Smith, Siciliano and McInerney. Simon Frankish played in the reserves and got 10 possessions in the 3rd quarter. Frankish was playing his 150th club game. Ryan Webster who has played the last 2 weeks with East Perth is transferring his work to Melbourne and will be available to play. Both McCarthy and Waller should return after the June break. Robbie Ross played his 100th game and was best on field.
The first half was a game between two average sides. Kelly kicked our first goal via Cotchett then later Papillo who was playing really well kicked the other. Ross, Mullett, Henley and Cullen were good. Mendes copped a bad one to the head just before the siren and to his credit came back in the last quarter. At ¼ time they led 3-4 to 2-2.
Knox extended it’s lead early in the 2nd quarter and we were in for a struggle before Papillo kicked his second. Froud goaled via Griffiths then Spriggs goaled on the siren. Ross was terrific in the ruck and took good marks when in defence. Mullett was running everywhere and Rushton was showing his usual courage. At ½ time they led 5-8 to 5-7. Better players for the half were Ross, Henley, Mullett, Papillo, Cullen and Rushton.
It was a different game after half time as we piled on 6-7 to 2-3. Greig who had been off target kicked 3 goals for the quarter including mark of the day. Froud goaled via Greig with Mullet kicking the other goal. At ¾ time we had burst the game open and led 11-14 to 7-11.
In the last quarter we kicked 3-4 to 2-5 so on the scoreboard it was fairly even. A couple of good things to come out of the last quarter were Siciliano with 12 possessions and McInerney who had been quiet – he suddenly bust onto the scene with 2 goals and a spectacular mark. Greig continued where he left off in the 3rd quarter booting another 3 goals with Siciliano the other. Better players for the half were Greig, Ross, Mullett, Henley and Siciliano.
Goalkickers – Greig 6, Froud 2, Mullett 2, Papillo 2, McInerney 2 with singles to Kelly, Spriggs and Siciliano.
Best Players – Ross, Mullett, Henley, Papillo, Greig, Rushton and Cullen.
Possssions – Mullett 42, Siciliano 30, Henley 27, Cotchett 24, Bardon 23, Rushton 19 and Ross18. Henley and Mullett each took 11 marks and Greig 10. Ross had 34 hit outs.
1% - Papillo 10, Ross 9 and 7 each to Millhouse, Griffiths, Mendes and Siciliano.
Coach’s Comments – Praised Robbie Ross on his 100 games and said he was terrific today. David said the back 6 were much more up and about. There were some good signs and it was a small step in the right direction.
RESERVES FINAL SCORE
KNOX 8-14-62 def VERMONT 7-4-46
Although Knox seemed the better side all day it was a shame when the game ended after only 9 minutes into the last quarter due to a Knox injury and the ambulance wait. We had just kicked a goal and were getting momentum when the injury occurred. It was a low scoring game and at half time Knox led 5-6 to 3-2. Della’Quilla kicked 2 and Cameron one. The pre-match expectations were high with so many players dropping back after the Balwyn game. Knox kicked 3-5 to 3-2 in the 3rd term with Frankish getting 10 touches. Cameron was another good player. As I mentioned earlier the game was called off after Della’Quilla kicked his 4th goal. As I hosted the Eagletonians lunch I will leave it to the coach for best players.
Goalkickers – Della’Quilla 4 and singles to Cameron, Mendico and Henderson.
Coach’s Best Players – Della’Quilla, Cameron, Frankish and Mendico.
Coach’s Comments – We lacked accountability in the first half – it cost us dearly. We had some momentum going when the game was called off.
COLTS FINAL SCORE
VERMONT 17-17-119 def KNOX 8-5-53
Williams kicked the opening goal after good ball movement. When we moved the ball quickly we looked a far superior side but when we got into a scrap with them we looked ordinary. Sonsie goaled via Checkley then goals came from Baird and Barry-Murphy. Checkley’s tackling was terrific all day – it was reminiscent of Bernie Dinneen. At ¼ time we led 4-1 to 1-1.
A frustrating 10 minutes after the break with Burmeister going down and taken to hospital for observation. Knox lifted their intensity and were very physical. Williams kicked 2 quick goals then Sonsie got his second with a long goal that beat the pack. At half time we led 7-7 to 3-2. Better players for the half were Yousef, Barry-Murphy, Thompson, Williams and Checkley.
It was all Vermont after the break adding 5-5 to 1-2 for the quarter. Pretto was good coming off half back. Baird kicked 2 goals with singles to McAuley and Symes. At ¾ time we led 12-12 to 4-4.
A big wake up call early in the last quarter when Knox kicked 4 of the first 5 goals. But goals from Johns, McAuley, Baird, Sonsie and Strachan steadied the ship. We probably played our best footy for the day in the last 5 minutes. Better players for the half were Baird, McAuley, Williams,Pretto and Rodwell.
Goalkickers – Baird 4, Williams 3, Sonsie 3, McAuley 2 with singles to Barry-Murphy, Pretto, Symes, Johns and Strachan.
INVICTA PLAY OF THE DAY – ADRIAN FERRES smother and tackle in the 1st quarter.
Coach’s Best Players – McAuley, Rodwell, Davidson, Mendes, Checkley and Symes.
Coach’s Comments - We have to be more careful with our kicking for goal – 17-17 not satisfactory. Lots of missed handballs and dropped marks. Our endeavour was not all that good and it won’t be good enough against the top sides.
