In passing we should also recognise
the contribution of the Rolfe family to football in Qld. As principals of Crown Racing, Paul and Andrea are avid fans of the Sport of Kings and it provides an appropriate metaphor. We are not horse racing
industry literate but the blood lines for footy are there, with Paul's Dad having had 8 games with the bloods in 1961, and clearly Andrea's Mum has an expert and vast knowledge of the game. We are guessing that had there been female footy in her day she would have been the Skilton of her times! We are also thinking as a Dam and Sire combo, the gorgeous Andrea
and Paul would command big bickies. Jacko’s run in the u/18 Scorpions on Saturday completes
the trifecta with all the colts making that level (and u/16s) of representative football. Outstanding,
and both the servee and the server should be in great demand as they are put out to grass!
Seniors
All the scribes suggested this
might be a danger game. The Maggies have some form at home and the mid week
resignation of their coach had the potential to produce an upset. But as the afternoon unfolded so did
any opposition.
The first stanza appeared to be a
waiting game with our blokes anticipating something that wasn’t going to
happen. The Maggies were testing Tinka’s temperament and the ground was testing
our set ups. The Chelmer oval dimensions are a bit SCGish and we looked to be
clogging it up. Our on-ballers seemed to be in two minds in attack and the
forwards were not playing deep enough to create the space.
Rusty appeared to be rusty after
the 4 week rest but as the game progressed his courage produced the context for
him finding form. At one moment in the third quarter he was playing on instinct
after a particularly brutal clash on the outer wing. One had the impression
that at some stage we would just up and away when we got it right. And so it
was. We thought JD and the Barista were the prizes in the scrap that was the
first quarter, and that Tom Balcombe showed he was settling in well. Jesse was
gut running and providing opportunities while Gloss gathered a lot of
possessions and fed the ball off by hand to a back six that were gearing up for
a huge day. Tom also found the nut fairly easily and his thoughtful left foot
pretty much operated at 100% effectiveness. A pretty crappy 2 point lead at the
first break with some worrying signs in the accuracy department.
From quarter time on, the backs
were magnificent. They did as they liked. We thought Smithy might be missed,
not so. Stewie called the plays, the setups, the tempo and nominating targets
for the ball carrier and was impassable at CHB; Quickie reminded us of David
Dench with strong clearances and driving plays up the ground - classy all day; Searly confounded
his opponents as he employed Scarlet Pimpernel tactics in the old 1 – 2 play
and finding space for a switch or link, he even popped up to kick one of our
two goals; Rhino’s strength was impressive as he literally wrenched the sherrin
from packs and thumped the thing long to a player or space; and Fifey was
inspirational with run downs, desperate on the line plays and running off the
contest as a play maker. The Midas
touch was on for anyone playing alongside these blokes. Liam Frawley, Hales had
some time down back, Simmo and
Cloughy, all attained the same standards set by the aforementioned. We kicked
5 7 in the second so someone else
was in the office as well.
It should be said that the forwards
were great also. They didn’t do as they liked because if they had we would have
absolutely smashed the Magpies. We finished the day with 23 behinds! We noted
that at least 9 of these were ‘gimmees’ and while the perceptive Dozer observed
that Carringbush with all their full time footballers, money, coaches and
support could only manage 2 12 in
the second half v Geebung, it is still with amazement that we watch as the nut
hits the post, or misses by so much that an out of bounds results. Still, we
are not out there, and we are grateful for the sporting entertainment and
commitment. Fults is a shining example of commitment. He knocked up 5 big ones, at least one in each quarter,
and in doing so brought up his QAFL career 650th - simply outstanding. R-Pants, Squiz
and Cookie were the other standouts for ours.
The game turned a little boring in
the third period interrupted by some flashes of brilliance marred by posters.
Ryan and Bowers were getting in the right places. For a first gamer young
Bowers displayed a cool head to get away a long and destructive handball to
Cookie waiting in the square, who thankfully brought up two flags; and the ball
magnet from Bacchus Marsh chipped in with two that levelled his ledger after a
couple of points from set shots earlier on.
The last quarter was the only one
for the day in which we kicked more goals than points. We opened with a trio from
Fults, R-Pants and Tinka, who was our pick for the best in the closing quarter as
he dominated centre clearances and fed the lads up front as well as picking up
his one and only for the day. One
particular assist set Cookie up for a 45m no daylight shot that displayed his
kicking skills. An altercation developed after Simmo was decked – altercation
on, Tinka off – and there may be some fall out. Tom Balcombe showed a bit of
Rhys Jones timing to side step a couple of defenders and open his account,
while Rhino, sent forward to provide a rest for the veteran whose joints were
audibly creaking, drove home 2 excellent goals.
Final scores: Broadbeach 18 23 131 def Western Magpies 5 9 39
Goals: Fulton 5, Cooke 4, Pantic R 2, Ryan 2, Dienjes 2, Balcombe 1, Zorko 1, and Searl 1.
Best: Quick, Stewart, Searl, Pantic R, Zorko and Fulton.
Our blokes appear to have taken a
step on the confidence ladder. There is an air of success expectation. On field
there is a tacit understanding of where their team mates will or should be –
coaching instructions are taken on board - and consequently we retain
possession, move the ball in a preferred manner, minimise turnovers, and
provide more scoring opportunities. On t’other hand we pressurise ball carriers
when not in possession and keep up the pace, we persevere. It is a good brand
of footy and that enlivens our skills. Looking forward to next week – you bet.
Magoos
Scores and details available on tagged page. Apart from the second term we held sway against a team occupying a slot in the top four.
The team was bolstered by a number of under eighteen players who did the club proud. Thanks to Luke Dempsey - Ceh, Fraser Gregor, Mitchell Kavic, Mitchell Nibbs, Nathan Pellin and Nick Sheehan.
We would appreciate a volunteer to provide match reports for the Magoos. Week in, week out, the players provide us a spectacle of our great game, and of things to come for the club as we monitor player development. They deserve and are due public domain recognition of club representation.
