Saturday’s game was an enormous challenge after
coming off the seniors’ worst shellacking for many years the week before
at Werribee. Despite confidence being at a low ebb the boys approached
Tuesday
and Thursday determined to persevere with our running style that so far
had
eluded us this year. The boys set themselves the challenge of getting 1
tackle
& 1 shepherd per quarter, and to their credit we managed our season
high of
32 tackles and 24 shepherds! To put this in perspective, the fact we
only had
10 shepherds in total for the past 2 games shows where our efforts were
on
Saturday!
Having said all of that we knew that Aquinas (also
winless) would be just as revved up and they showed this early jumping
out to a
3 goal lead with strong contesting and running. To the credit of our
boys, we
tightened the reins on the Aquinas runners and started to tackle well
which
resulted in 4 goals in a row (including a wonderful mid air strike from
Anderson) in the last 6 minutes to go into the quarter time break with a
lead
of 2 points. We were well served by Chris Greenland who was dominating
up
forward assisted by the determined efforts of Daou, Hogan &
Abdallah!
The second stanza started in exactly the same fashion
with Aquinas scoring 3 quick goals with their centre-half-forward
standing a
good 8 inches taller than Ryan Storey and Aquinas isolating that
advantage!
That however was beginning to show their weakness in chasing from their
forward
line with Storey becoming a font of many attacks! Greenland continued
to be a
handful for the Aquinas backs and with Abdallah snagging his second
crumbed
goal our forward line really threatened. Skipper Brosolo and partner in
crime
Stafford were winning the contested ball as we began to dominate the
Ruck
through Mattison and Cunningham. By half time we lead by 4 points and
had
achieved the task Coach Feutrill had put to the players of winning each
quarter.
Unfortunate match ending injuries to Kennedy &
Tibaldi saw Simon Ryan move in the pivot, Anderson into a forward
pocket,
Marchesi to a back flank, Adgemis tagging and a clear message to our
backs to
run off their taller opponents and get our game going. It quickly
became
apparent that we were beginning to dominate Aquinas who struggled to get
the
ball into their forward half. We peppered the goals but unfortunately
3.7 did
not put Aquinas away!
A quick top up on belief and a refocus on winning the
quarter from Coach Feutrill saw the Friar machine get going for only the
second
time this year. Storey continued in David & Goliath fashion running
down
the ground supplying our tall forwards in Greenland, Daou and Cunningham
and
the score started to accumulate. Woodman completed his dashing day from
half
back with his second and when Ryan goaled from a wonderful mark we had
breached
the 10 goal mark. 9.5 in the final quarter was a great finish and went a
long
way to repatriating our percentage after last week’s thrashing.
We had many good players throughout the day but
Greenland, Storey & Adgemis were our best!
Go Friars, Sal.

We started the game off slowly by not playing the game on
our terms, over committing numbers in the contest which led to our
accountability being poor. Our backline held strong and provided good
rebound
with run-carry of the footy, which meant when the game did open up we
were able
to play better footy. We must keep working towards that style of footy,
as
when it went our way our boys did a fantastic job and were able to ran
out
winners by 70 points.
A particular mention to our up-and-comers D-Bar and
Mazza. They have been a fantastic asset coming from our Under 19s squad
last
year and becoming excellent players within our senior team. It is
examples
like these which show the importance of the Under 19s to our club as a
whole,
and exactly how valuable they can be to our club. Well done boys – keep
up the good work!

We travelled to St Bernards who were undefeated and were
always going to be up against it. The first ten minutes of the first
quarter
were good but again we tired and they run over us for the rest of the
quarter.
In the second we kicked 3 goals in a row and the boys were playing a
very good
brand of football, but again 10 minutes into the quarter we tired and
let the
opposition dominate possession.
Our third quarter was probably our worst quarter for the
day, struggling to impact the football. At three quarter time we
changed
things around a bit and l asked the boys to slow up the tempo of the
game. We
spoke about and set the goal of not getting beaten by 200 points, and to
the boys
credit they went out after the break and played very smart and skilled
football. We made the game into something the Saints would be proud of
and
limited St Bernards to only 4 goals for the quarter – a fantastic
result.
At the end of the day St Bernards are a class above us
but the boys played the best they have for the year. I was very proud
of the
way the boys conducted themselves before, during and after the game – we
need to keep our heads up and continue to improve our football. Special
thanks
to all the helpers on the day and to Henna from our senior team for
making the
trip out to the Snake Pit. We really do appreciate it, and its acts
like these
that help cement the important of this team for our football club moving
forward. We’re looking forward to a good hit-out against Old Trinity.

THIRDS
Special Notice for our Thirds
An Interesting Development for our 3rds
Team over the last week....St Kevin's have been charged with misconduct
from
the teamsheet during the 1 May match vs our Whitefriars team. It has
been
found that St Kevin's had multiple forged signatures and thus, the match
has
been awarded to Whitefriars. This puts us 4 and 1 and solidly inside
the top 4
– a fantastic result.
Go the Thirds and Go Friars,
Stephen.

Best Players: A. Gibbs, J. Waters, B. Wilson, S.
Malone, D. Gallacher, T. Byrnes
This week against Nobs was probably the gutsiest
performance we have put together this season so far. There seemed to be
a
clear scoring end even though there was not much of a breeze which we
were
kicking to in the final quarter. The fact that we really worked hard to
the very end is what got us over the line.
I thought that our back 6 really held it together & applied an
enormous
amount of pressure with their tackling and scrapping at every
opportunity. Virus & Gibbsy were as solid as a rock down there and
Hayesy left his opposition for dead with his run out of the backline.
Top
effort from all of these boys!
Turning out to be a really hot day, rotations through the midfield were
paramount. Dave Gallacher & Byrnesy gave away a fair bit of height
to
the Nobs ruckman but created a contest for us every time. Jimmy Waters
was exceptional in the midfield earning him the BOG for the day. Up
forward, Shagga Malone was sensational and worked well with Byrnesy and
Gallacher when they were resting in the pocket...well done to all.
If there was one thing that I picked out of that game, I believe we need
to
improve on our disposal skills by hand & foot. We really need to
concentrate on getting our hips moving forward and not kicking off just 2
steps. By hand, we were handballing to players that were forward of the
footy & standing flat footed. All players should be getting to
training
to work at improving these skills.
All in all it was a great win by the boys with our season off to a solid
start
now sitting at 3 & 2.
Well done lads,
Go Friars, Ben Fisher

The 4ths were away against NOBS/ST PATS
on the weekend. The first quarter saw us get off to a good start.
Hagen Shaw
and Matthew Shanks were winning the clearances out of the middle and
accurate
kicking by our forwards saw us take an 11 point lead in to the first
break.
We started the second quarter as we had
finished the first with lots or run and energy all over the ground,
however, as
the quarter went on and our boys tired, we turned the ball over by
foot. This
made it extremely hard for our back men to stay on top of their
opponents and
if it weren’t for the efforts of Brad Wilton at Full back an 11 point
deficit going in to the main break could have been a lot worse.
The start of the third quarter saw us
lift our intensity and start to control the ball again. This included
Brad
Lees and Heath Fulton working really hard in the midfield, getting their
hands
on the ball first and pushing forward to kick goals. This intensity
also
brought us undone with Dave McManus going in for a tackle, slamming into
an
opponent only to collect a shoulder to the head. This meant no bench
and other
injured players needing to remain on the field. Some late goals against
us
meant we went in to the last quarter down by 17 points, although we’re
very happy to report that Dave is OK, and thanks to the umpires and
officials
who did a great job looking after him.
The boys fought hard throughout the last
quarter never giving in. Norm Elliott kicked the first goal of the
quarter
giving him 3 goals for the game and the team a chance to come away with a
win.
Unfortunately with the opposition having 6 more players to rotate on and
off
the bench it wasn’t to be. In the end we ran out of legs and went down
by 35 points.
If we can improve our player numbers I
still believe this side can be part of the finals action. We have the
ability…we just need to all get on the park at the same time!
