The lucky nine boys still involved in Vic country try outs travelled down to Melbourne on Saturday for a mini camp that involved a training session at Arden Street on Saturday afternoon and a practise match against Vic Metro at Visy Park on Sunday.
The trip down was a mostly smooth one however the driving skills of one P.Partington got some of the boys a bit anxious, as his past record of driving mini buses isn’t a good one, with numerous accidents over the years. Nick ‘windscreens’ O’Brian’s jokes were also starting to annoy the boys, with Nick the only one laughing through his below par comedy routine.
When arriving in Melbourne the boys quickly put away their gear in the hotel and got ready for the training run down at Arden Street. A short sharp session consisted of a bit of touch than some match practise to show the coaching staff who is in form and ready to play in two weeks time. After the training session the boys had a recovery session in the hotel pool that was in ice like conditions.
Saturday night we went through our team rules, guidelines and play book so the whole squad knows exactly what is expected from them.
The first game against Vic Metro at 11:30 included Lucas ‘Dunne’ Cook, Jeremy’ GWS’ Cameron and Tyrone Ross. All the boys stepped up to the occasion and performed very well, showing all the coaching staff they have what it takes to play at the next level. Cookie and Jezza looked very dangerous up forward, and Tyrone was fantastic in the clearances. The boys had a comfortable victory in the first hit out.
The second game included the ‘X Factor’ Richard Bamblett, Nick O’Brian, Coleman Scheche, and the big slab. Like the first game all the boys played well, and showed the coaching staff that they have what it takes to play for Vic Country.
Yet again the way home on the bus was made even longer for the boys as Nick O’Brian continues his poor comedy act. We finally returned home in quick time, and we must thank the big fella for driving us to Melbourne.
This week’s game against the Sandringham Dragon’s at Eureka stadium is a huge one for the boys so that we can get back on the winners list after a disappointing loss the week before against the Knights. A good week on the track should lead us on stead for a great victory on Saturday.
