SENIORS FINAL SCORE
BALWYN 31-18-210 def VERMONT 15-4-94
Two weeks ago it was our biggest margin defeat – on Saturday it was the highest score ever kicked against us. It was a perfect day for football on a good surface. Bardon, Henderson and Debney came in for McInerney who was dropped while Nummy and Andonov were injured. There was a last minute change with Mendes out with gastro replaced by first gamer Luke Johnson. As Balwyn ran onto the ground I asked Mick Miller if he had half a dozen ladders in his ute because Balwyn looked awesome with their height. This and speed proved to be the factor in their emphatic win. Balwyn coach Daniel Harford spoke at the luncheon before the game and explained how they went about recruiting the fastest team in 1st division.
However, the signs were good early with Froud kicking the opening goal via unselfish play from Greig. Our intensity was terrific. Greig goaled via Mullett before the tigers got their first. Kelly kicked two with an assist from Mullett and when Froud goaled we had won the quarter leading 5-3 to 2-6.
Balwyn kicked 9-6 to 2 goals in the 2nd term to blast us off the park. Our intensity disappeared and their’s increased tenfold. The quarter was played in their half of the ground as we had no match for their height and clearances. Our only 2 goals came from Rushton via Spriggs and Dore and late in the term Mullett. At half time they led 11-12 to 7-3. Better players for the half were Mullett, Rushton, Cullen and Spriggs. The first 3 named were playing their hearts out.
It was much of the same on the 3rd quarter but when McCarthy went off we were really under the pump. They added 10-1 to 4 goals for the term. McLure and Ross were getting plenty of hit outs but they were slaughtering us at the clearances. Froud kicked 2 goals with singles to Kelly and Cotchett. Mullett had a fine game with little interchange rest. At ¾ time they led 21-13 to 11-3.
In the final term they kicked 11-5 to 4-1 to completely embarrass us. Froud added 2 goals to take his tally to 6 with singles to Greig and Bardon. Balwyn winners by 116 points and have a break on the competition ladder after Croydon defeated Noble Park

A win is a win even against a very poor side. We led 7-2 to 3 goals at ¼ time. Smith was a standout closely followed by McInerney. Della’Quilla kicked 3 goals and it was good to see captain Like Illott back playing and kicking one of his 2 goals. In the 2nd quarter we kicked 4-5 to 2 goals. Della’Quilla kicked his 4th but shortly after left the ground with an injury. Travis Bird who played well in the ruck and around the ground last week continued that form. Both Jones and Bull were playing week on half back and half forward respectively. At half time we led 11-7 to 5-0. Better players for the half were Smith, McInerney, Jones, Bull, T.Bird, Della’Quilla and Siakavelis.
In the 3rd term we kicked 8-3 to 2-5 and probably the highlight was a terrific running goal after coming off half back by Siakavelis. Geraghty, McDonald and Carrodus were making their stamp on the game. Jones was outstanding in probably his best ever game. At ¾ time we led 19-10 to 7-5.
It was more of the same in the last quarter adding 8-5 to 1-3. Humphrey kicked 2 goals to finish with 3 for the game while Bordin kicked 2 as they shared the goals around. Better players for the half were Jones, Smith, Geraghty, McDonald, Smith, Carrodus and Humphrey.

Coach’s Comments - We had some really good passages of play against limited opposition. The game of Matt Smith was outstanding. Well done everyone as we prepare to play last years premiers next week (Knox).

Coaches comment
Side lacked intensity in the middle part of the game when a good opposition side like Montrose came at us. Under scoreboard pressure we lifted our game with Patty Lawlor, Thommo, Kazza and Xavier leading the way. It was good to see the leaders stand up when needed. It was a good to be challenged giving us all something to work on
