Bright sunshine and sensational conditions have again greeted our players at Henson Park, with all three grades in action against Wests.
Accurate kicking and strong marking options up forward gave the Bombers the edge in the first term, with the Bombers leading by 15 points at the first change. It was a similar story in the second quarter, and although Wests were persistent the Bombers were far too good around the ground.
The game tightened in the third term, but with 3 unanswered goals the Bombers extended their lead to 57 points at the last change. And the last quarter was one-way traffic, a 7-goal haul by the Bombers taking the final winning margin to 97 points.
Final Score - North Shore 21.12 (138) def Western Suburbs 6.5 (41)
By the time the First Division game got under way, a few dark clouds had rolled in and a couple of drops of rain were felt. But conditions were still good, and the outlook for the Bombers got even better after a strong first quarter which saw the Bombers lead by 21 points at quarter time. But the second half was a struggle against a physical Wests lineup; and although the Bombers scored two goals the margin was reduced to 10 points at the long break.
The third quarter was an arm wrestle. Wests scored two early goals to take the lead, but Evan Davis' third goal put the Bombers back in front. Both sides created opportunities over the remainder of the quarter, but neither side was able to capitalise and at three-quarter time the Bombers led by 2 points.
The Magpies kicked the first goal of the final term to take the lead, but again the Bombers fought back through a double to Michael Voyage. At the 10-minute mark the game was in the balance, but the Bombers controlled possession in the final 12 minutes to hang on for a thrilling 9-point victory.
Final Score - North Shore 10.10 (70) def Western Suburbs 9.7 (61)
The Premier Division game sees top spot on the line, and the game was always going to be in which no quarter was asked or given. A see-sawing first quarter, with several lead changes, finished with Wests leading by a point at quarter time. But Wests got on top in the second quarter, and the Bombers trailed by 19 points at the long break.
The third quarter didn't run our way. A devastating 4-minute burst by Wests put them well in front, with the Bombers unable to manage a goal for the quarter until after the siren. With the Bombers 32 points down at the last change, they had some work to do to get out of this one.
But work hard they did. It took time to break down the Wests' defence, but as the goals started to flow in the final minutes, the scent of a comeback was in the air. The Bombers got the margin back to within a kick, but Wests were saved by the bell as the fast-finishing Bombers fell just short.
Final Score - Western Suburbs 11.12 (78) def North Shore 11.8 (74)
