The Friars ventured across town to Werribee
to face what
was clearly a massive test. For much of the game the contest was
genuine
and the boys matched the opposition, however at critical times Werribee
were
able to get their running game going and our team was not able to stop
the
charge. This led to massive blowouts in the 2nd and 4th
quarters.
On the positive side the form of our young players in Daniel
Tibaldi and Daniel Hogan continues to impress. We have played the
leading
team in the competition on their own dung hill and now know the standard
required. I am sure the coaching and playing group will be putting
every
effort in to get to that level and be a force in the competition. This
starts with a big effort required against traditional rivals Aquinas at
Friar
Park this weekend.

We started the game with a great first quarter – 5
goals to zip – which was achieved through hard running and our work off
the footy. Our second quarter into the wind was just as good with 4
goals to
each side. Venturing into the second half with only 2 fit guys on the
bench,
we still managed to kick 5 goals to 4 to enter the final quarter with a
comfortable lead. While Werribee lifted their intensity at the contest,
we
continued to play our style of footy which was pleasing to myself, and
allowed
us to run out winners –something that we didn’t achieve last
season.
Overall, a great result. Looking forward to a big game
at home during our Rivalry Round vs Aquinas this week – we hope you get
down to support the boys.

Our Under 19s came up against a team that had not won a
game and we started quite well. Old Carey won the toss and kicked with
the 3
goal wind, during which time we gave a very good account for ourselves –
for the first time this season we were in the game at quarter time.
Into the
2nd Quarter we were still in the game but 5 minutes before half time
they
started to get on top. Lack of rotations was starting to hurt. After
half
time the boys fought it out but the opposition was a bit too good on the
day –
with lack of rotations on and off the ground we ran out of steam in the
last
half.
To the boys credit they fought the game out all the way
and the club should be proud of the spirit in the group. Next week we
face a
stiff challenge in St Bernards at the Snake Pit...but who dares wins.

Probably not the best day out on the park for us on
Saturday. Allowing St. Kevin’s to kick 10 goals in the 1st quarter
was not the start to the game we were looking for. The intense, hard
running
pressure football that we had played in the previous 2 rounds seemed to
have
vanished into thin air. The highlight of the day was in the last
quarter,
where we were competitive and regained some of the intensity that had
led us to
big wins.
As I said after the game, we were simply beaten by a better team on the
day. It is important that we don't be too hard on ourselves. St
Kevin’s had some terrific footballers that had played senior footy in
previous seasons & I feel that we will not come up against too many
sides
in this competition that will be as good. That isn't to say that we
need
to be better prepared from the start of the game – we must be able to
put
4 quarters of footy together.
So what does that mean for this week against NOBS? All players must be
at
the ground & starting to get ready one hour prior to the start of
the game
– no excuses for being late. Our players must start thinking about
the game & how they as individuals can have an impact on the game
& to
the goals of the team.
Most importantly, keep your heads up – a good side is often judged
on how they bounce back after a big loss like we had on the weekend.

The 4ths victory
vs Old Westbourne. More photos at www.facebook.com/WhitefriarsOCFC
A great first win by the 4ths on the weekend.
The win was set up in the first half by some great
clearance work out of the middle by Brad Lees and Matthew Shanks. With
Aidan
Baggoley at full forward marking everything that came his way and the
opposition not knowing what had hit them, the Friars
had a 48 point lead going
in to the main break.
The third quarter saw our boys getting a little goal
hungry with 32 players in our half of the ground. This made for a very
crowded
forward line, hence the team kicking 2 goals 11 points! The breeze in
the last
quarter picked up and favoured Old Westbourne, but the boys in the back
line
stood up and defended well with Matt Sammartino and Kris Krolikowski
doing a
fine job in restricting the opposition. Some great work from Norm
Elliott down
forward saw him snag 3 goals in the second half.
Overall a great team effort with each player making a
contribution. A special thanks to all the 3rds guys who backed up from
their
game, to give us some numbers on the bench – we hope to have a close
relationship between our teams and the Footy Club all season long. I’m
also hoping the 4ths can now string together a couple of wins and build
some
momentum for the season ahead.
