The AFL had their rivalry round last week with the Derby,
the Showdown, the Line in the Sand, the Rugby Game and so on. This week
is our rivalry round with the Seniors and Reserves up against our
tradition foe
Aquinas. Many of us played school footy against Aquinas and since 1987
we
have both been in the VAFA.
Some of our most memorable games were in Finals against
Aquinas including two finals that earned the Friars
promotions in the early years.
Those in attendance will vividly recall the long goals from the centre
square
at Koolunga Reserve from Paul Coughlin to get us our first promotion. A
year later at Monash, with the side looking down the barrel at half
time, the
team received a well-deserved bake from Coach Ray Keane. The Friars came
out firing in the second half and hit the front in the dying stages with
a
miraculous goal from the boundary against the wind by Nick Hughes. The
Friars went on the win the game, were promoted
to D Grade and then defeated
Powerhouse to win our first senior flag in 1988.
Along the way some results went the other way, and we
shared our heartache with the tragic loss of Simon Strike and Mark
Wilkinson to
both of our clubs. This week, it is for the trophy struck in their
honour that
we play. We look forward to this week’s game against our great and
respected rival Aquinas, as well as the local rivalries topic to be
discussed
by our guest speaker Paul Daffy .
