THE Eastern Ranges have put their second win on the board for season 2010 after an upset victory over the undefeated Geelong Falcons on Saturday.
Out staging the round six favourites at Box Hill City Oval, the Ranges fought hard to claim their three-point victory after trailing for the first half of the match.
A competitive first term by both sides left little margin for error; the Ranges capitalising on four of six goal scoring opportunities setting them in good stead for the remainder of the match.
Tight pressure displayed by the Ranges backline saw the Falcons struggle for a clean shot at goal but managed to win the quarter by three-points.
Concentration throughout the second quarter proved to be crucial on the Ranges behalf whilst the Falcons triumphed forward to extend their lead to nine-points before the main break.
Not wanting a repeat of last weeks’ narrow loss to the Cannons, the Ranges were determined to fight back in the second half.
The Ranges held the Falcons to only one goal to turn over scores in the third term.
Key forwards such as Michael Bussey and Hayden Crozier played a critical role in the third and fourth kicking seven goals in a joint effort.
Ranges coach Darren Bewick said that scoring let the Falcons down – Geelong only managing to convert a 40 per cent accuracy rate compared to the Ranges 65 per cent.
“I thought both sides had a strong match – our boys managed to come out on top and I’m very pleased with their performance.”
“The main thing that let Geelong down was their accuracy for goal. They had plenty of scoring opportunities but were unable to take advantage of these at the end of the day,” Bewick said.
Bussey, Crozier and Patton put multiple goals on the board for the Ranges, whilst team mates Toce, Post, Del Para and Mullett also claimed singles to their name.
Michael Bussey was voted best on ground for his unstoppable performance in the goal square and Guy Phelps also was highly commended racking up an impressive 32 possessions on the day.
Next week’s round seven showdown against Gippsland Power will be a crucial win for the Ranges, who are only one win away from claiming Gippsland’s spot in the top eight of the TAC Cup ladder.
Make sure you are there to support the team on Saturday 22nd May, 2:00pm at Box Hill City Oval. C’arn the Ranges!
