On Saturday the boys travelled up to Preston for the big clash against the 5 and 1 Northern Knights at NAB Oval. In an important game for us so we could keep our winning form continuing from the past two games against GWS and Bendigo. Into the side came first gamer Sebastian Ross who was coming off some fantastic form at local and school football, whilst there was still no W.Pomerin due to a recurring niggle in his lower back, or that’s what he is telling us anyway. Richard Bamblett was also out of the side this week due to an injury.
Before the game all the boys were pumped and quietly confident we could get our biggest win of the year against a very good team. The first half of football was a very high scoring affair with both teams able to put quick goals on the board. In a tight tussle all over the ground the boys started to get on top late in the second quarter to reduce the margin at half time to a couple of goals. The backline led by ‘Biscuit’ Arnott and Pat Barber were fantastic, as there pressure and spoiling was a highlight all day long. Cal Curry and Tyrone Ross worked hard all day around the stoppages whilst Tom McDonald and Jezza Cameron looked very dangerous down in the goal square. Coming into the rooms at half time we felt we had the Knights on the ropes as their running game felt like it dropped away late in the half, and we felt we could utilize this by using our runners from half back and through the midfield to advantage in the second half.
The second half unfortunately was a one sided affair with the Knights clearly beating us all over the ground, as we dropped our intensity and were second to the ball. Full credit must go to the Knights, but it was a very disappointing way to end the game, as we were right in it at half time and to get blown away like we did in the second half hurt all the boys. The 70 point loss is hopefully a reality check to all of us, as we have the week off this week and return the following week against the Sandringham Dragons which will be a massive game to get our season back on track. We have shown in patches that we can match it with anyone in the competition, and hopefully we can stop our second half fade outs and have a consistent four quarter effort against the dragons and get the four points.
Congratulations to Lucas ‘GC’ Cook on his first VFL game!
