Luckily this week I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity at the VFL due to the 23rd player rule. It was a fantastic chance for me to play at the next level with some fantastic AFL players from the Kangaroos such as Corey Jones and Daniel Pratt. All the boys made me fell welcomed all week at training which made the transition from TAC to VFL a lot easier. The game was played on Saturday against Box Hill Hawks, who had a number of Hawthorn players in their team. Although it was a nerve racking experience I was lucky enough to have some great leaders down in the backline helping me out such as Shaune Moloney and Marc Greig. The boys played a fantastic game against the premiership favourites wining by a comfortable 66 points in the end! The difference was noticeable from the TAC Cup with bigger bodies and just a quicker game style, but it was a great experience as I learned alot from all the boys and hopefully I can pass that on next week to all the rebel boys.
On Sunday the boys travelled up to Stawell for the big clash against Bendigo, an important game for us so we could keep our good form the week before against GWS continuing. Into the side came big slabber, Jake ‘self-proclaimed Twilight look alike’ Ward, Darcy Watchorn and Mick O’Callaghan for his first game of the year, as Will Pomerin had an apparent sore back and couldn’t play, many of the boys are still bemused at how soft he is.
The first quarter was a tight tussle with both teams hard at it, before Lucas Cook turned the game on its head early in the second. The big fella was in fine form all day kicking 6 goals 1 making it ten in two weeks, and taking a dozen marks. Tyrone Ross was also in unbelievable form as well in the midfield racking up a lazy 31 for the big fella. Cal Curry worked hard all day in the midfield, as Ben Mabon was fantastic in the ruck again for us. Bendigo kept pushing but the backline was fantastic all day lead by big slab and Pete Lulham who looked slick with his new (questionable) trim. The forward line functioned even better this week as Ivan Pyke returned from a much needed fishing trip and got all the boys presenting well, as dobo and Jeremy Cameron played well again.
In the end the boys won by a comfortable margin of 50 points, making it two in a row and a huge opportunity to make it 3 next Saturday against Northern Knights. We thank the Stawell football club for their generosity throughout the day. Til next week. Cheers, Marcus Darmody
