The Tradelink Western Magpies will have to be ready to play on Sunday 2pm at Chelmer when they take on a bolstered Lions with some key inclusions. The Lions have lost 3 straight since their demolition of Mt Gravatt in the season opener at the GABBA on Eatser Thursday but have strugled since with injury reducing the number of listed players available for QAFL games. Unfortunately for the Magpies that trend looks set to end this week with Jed Adcock, Sam Sheldon and Cheyne Stiller returning from injury through the QAFL and other inclusions at AFL level could see the likes of Proud, Hawkesly and Rockliff returning from the AFL to run out at Chelmer on Sunday.
This however is nothing new for the Magpies who faced the Lions on 3 occasions in 2009 when they had maximum or near maximum listed players and had every opportunity of winning when the two teams last met at Chelmer. Travis Johnstone proved to be the difference that day when the Lions came home strong in the last quarter to salvage a 29 point win against the gutsy Magpies. The 2010 Magpies are a much more capable of causing an upset against the Lions particularly in front of what is expected to be a big home crowd.
Key Magpies Ed McDonnell, Luke Scott, Richard Wenham, Chris Judson, Chris Mihalopoulos, Gerard Moore, Cameron Mitchelhill and Ben Janke-Cain have all been in great form over the first 3 rounds but it will require a complete team performance if the win the club craves is to eventuate. Zaine Pringle has been improving with every game and is ready to return to the form early last season and big Amercian Bryan Dragus was handy on debut in tough conditions for a big man will be keen to shine. David Hamill however could be they key to success, used in a variety of roles over the first 3 rounds will play deep forward and needs to kick multiple goals.
It will be a big day at Chelmer with a real view to the future at the Western Magpies as the bye for the Reserves provides for the Sherwood U/16's and Western Magpies U/18's to play in the lead up matches. The Sherwood U/16's will be kicking the dew of the ground at 9am while the U/18 Westside Asphalt Western Magpies will be taking on Morningside in a Grand Final replay in the curtain raiser at 11.15am.
This Sunday is also Inooroopilly Shopping Centre Ladies Day at the Western Magpies starting at 12 Noon in the function room. Walk ins on the day are more than welcome where $15 entry will get you some great entertainment with guest Craig McRae from the Brisbane Lions, Battle of the Sexes and the BOG Calcutta. Complimentary finger foods and Firestick bubbly will lighten the mood while $500 worth of Indooroopily Shopping Centre vouchers will be up for grabs as well as 5 1 month memberships to Contours Corinda and a hot pink Western Magpies jumper to be won.
