EAGLE-EYED shoppers would have spotted them, hanging out with the big
boys on a Melbourne sports store rack, acting like they were born to
live among the Cats, Hawks, Saints and Swans. Never mind that Gold
Coast Football Club doesn't have a nickname yet, it's got a $19.95
price tag just like every other scarf in town. Which got
Sporting Life wondering
about the worth of getting in early, grabbing a piece of red and gold
history to drape around your neck, and being able to say, ''I had a
Gold Coast scarf a year before they even played a proper game!'' Like
first edition books, surely a first edition scarf has got to be worth
something? So we consulted
The Age's sports memorabilia guru
Rick Milne
to get a handle on what a GC17 neck warmer might be worth in years to
come. ''I would think in about 50 years time we'll have forgotten all
about them and it'll be worth absolutely nothing,'' Milne said. ''Zero.
Or less.'' Which isn't an overly optimistic outlook for the AFL's
northern baby. Being an old Fitzroy man and regular Lions watcher at
the Gabba, Milne isn't sure the scarves will shift that fast anyway.
Nobody wears a footy scarf up there - the only scarves you see are
worn by ex-Victorians.'' If you're chasing memorabilia treasure, all is
not lost. Milne says a Gold Coast scarf with
Gary Ablett's
signature on it would be ''a different story altogether; if Gazza goes
- sorry, when Gazza goes there - and he signs one, you could put a
couple of hundred bucks on it for sure''.
