Rebel Yell – Greater Western Sydney with Marcus Darmody
The new kids on the block Greater Western Sydney travelled down to Ballarat for their first away game for the year, in a must win game for both teams played on ANZAC day.
It was a great opportunity for all the boys to play on such a big occasion in front of family and friends for our Sponsors day. Kurt Aylett captained the side for the first time and led the team brilliantly throughout the day, as the big fella from Terang Connor ‘biscuit’ Arnott made his debut for the Rebels.
The game started off well for the boys, with Lucas ‘GC’ Cook in fine form once again, stamping his authority on the game taking a staggering 15 marks from centre half forward and slotting four fantastic goals. The forward line functioned well throughout the day with Sam Dobson also kicking 4, and the ever reliable Jeremy Cameron kicking 3, whilst the small forwards in ‘baby’ Riley McFarline and Will Pomerin doing a great job with their forward pressure.
A handy lead at quarter time was extended during the second as once again Callum Currie and Tyrone Ross dominating at stoppages, as Ben “Sticks”Mabon was getting his first hand on the ball in the ruck all day long in a best on ground performance. Going into half time the message was clear, we must continue to work hard for each other as in the past three games we have dropped off our work rate and pressure in the second half.
The third quarter was some of the best football we have played as a group, with everyone playing their role and contributing as we started to run away from the Sydney boys. There were a couple of injuries in the second half with Will Pomerin suffering a back complaint (heart muscle again) and ‘pretty boy’ Spriggs hurting his knee. Other than the two injuries the second half was fantastic, although we did drop off our intensity for a short period in the last. Pete Lulhum was terrific off the wing late in the game giving us some much needed pace through the middle of the ground! When the final siren sounded the boys had a comfortable 34 point win, in a consistent four quarter display, as everyone played well and did their bit for the team.
We look forward to next week facing the Bendigo Pioneers in Stawell as we can hopefully win two in a row!
