Hawks win thriller at Manuka
The Hawks got away to a flying start to register their first win for the season, kicking five goals to two in the opening quarter for what proved to be a match winning lead.
The Hawks led at every change, however they gave their supporters and coaching staff a few anxious moments in the final quarter, before holding off the Demons late charge to win by two points.
Coach Glenn Gorman savoured his first victory as coach and said after the match "My heart was racing a million miles an hour".
Kurt Masters, Jay Kickett, Ben Cleaver, Liam Greenwell, Ben Symons and Peter Ashcroft were terrific for the Hawks, while veteran Jimmy Rice kicked three goals, Daniel Johnson two and eight other Hawks registering majors.
The final score was:
Hawks: 5.2 8.4 11.9 13.13-91
Demons: 2.3 6.7 9.10 13.11-89
The Hawks reserves also beat the Demons in the curtain raiser to have their second win for the year, 9.11-65 to 6.12-48.
The U18s put in a much improved effort, but were left to rue inaccurate kicking as they went down by ten points, 8.11-59 to 6.13-49 while Canberra Districts team lost to Belconnen 12.15-87 to 6.5-41.
The Hawks host Queanbeyan at Greenway oval next Saturday.
