Last weeks games at
Nangwarry saw a wet start to Season 2010. Best of luck to all teams, today we
welcome Port Mac to our oval. Once again Hatherleigh is looking a picture.
Thank you to all those who gave up their time on Sunday and attended the working
bee.
The Junior Colts came up against
a very undermanned Nangwarry outfit, and with great pressure and intensity were
able to come away with an easy win. The bigger boys stood out, with best player
awards going to: John Cavanagh Real Estate Award - Luke Green,
Pete Walters Award - Brett Watson, Gary Nilsson Award - Thomas Chant, HFC Ladies
Committee Award - Dylan Montouri, Hatherleigh Sport & Rec Award -
Jake "The Snake" Wight.
The Senior Colts season got off to a good start with an
easy win over an undermanned Nangwary. Even though we have not had the best
turnout for preseason training the boys played well together and the players
adapted to their new positions. Senior Colts award winners were:
Seebohm Sportspower Award- Kieren Agnew, KAOS Video Award -
Michael Ogilvie, Gary Nilsson Award- Aden Bell, HFC Ladies Committee Award-
Cameron Slape, Hatherleigh Sport & Rec - Hugh Bateman. Joseph Brooks
and Fergus Slape had plenty of the ball on the wings and Tom Schulz won the
‘Smithy’ award. There will be no coffee table speeches this week when we take on
Peter Zeitz’s Pt Mac.
With the cray fishing season still going, and
players with other commitments unavailable, the B Grade opted for 16 aside,
which Nangwarry gracefully accepted. With some retirees included in the run on
side the boys were keen to give a bold showing first up. Although the scoreline
showed a loss they battled hard and if the number of turnovers was smaller the
score could have been different. Stinger battled his heart out all day, Warnie
gave his all and Fatz did enough to show he hasn't lost anything in retirement.
A bit more training and a few more players available and the B Grade will be
looking forward to a great season. Reserves award winners were: K & S Ampol Award - Matt Nettle, Dave Reilly's Panel & Panel Award- Aden Bell, Beachport Hote Award - Matt Emmerson Award, Grand Hotel Award - Luke
Haines.
First game of the year and our A Grade side, with a few new
faces included, showed some very positive signs right from the first
bounce. We began the game with some great intensity and pressure all
around the ground, the tackling and hard work at stoppages was a highlight and
looked at times as though we could break the game open. Coming out from
half time with scores even, Nangwarry edged ahead to take a couple of goal lead
into the third quarter. With a few sore bodys we were made to make a few
changes and unfortunately our pressure from the first half began to fade.
Coming in to the last quarter we looked a bit tired in the legs and we were not
paying enough attention to our man. Nangwarry began to move forward and
use the ball well, scoring 8 goals in the last quarter to take the points.
Looking ahead to Round 2 on our home ground, we will need to be ready to go
against an improved Pt Mac. A Grade Award Winners:
Somerset Hotel Award - Dale Fabris, Beachport Hotel Award- Matt
Fabris, Millicent Golf Award - Tim Finch, Bompas Award - Saxon Ellis, Prince of
Wales Hotel Award - Mat Faulkner.
Don't forget tonight after the Pt Mac game the Annual
Players Calcutta will be held. Players will be auctioned by Owen Merrett and
John Chay, starting at 8pm. If you are interested in purchasing a player get
your syndicate together early.
