The Tradelink Western Magpies showed some excellent signs in their 12.11.83 to 17.11.113 loss to Aspley at Graham Rd on Saturday. In his address to the players following the game coach Paul Grentell was spot when he told his players that the gap between their best football and worst football was too great. That will be the teams focus during the next week leading into Redland at home next Saturday.
The Magpies were blown away by Aspley early in the first quarter before making a late rally to go in at quarter time down 7.1 to 2.2. Aspley did have use of a strong breeze in the first quarter but the Magpies had to lift significantly to get back in the match. Lift they did and the Magpies dominated the quarter 4.4 to 0.4 with James Rozynski, Richard Wenham, Ben Jaenke-Cain and Chris Judson providing drive out of the middle dominating the clearances. The Magpies defense led by Ed McDonnell was rebounding strongly and youngsters Billy Moorhead and Cameron Mitchelhill standing strong.
After the long break the Magpies dominated the opening of the third quarter slaming on 4 goals with Luke Scott, Matt Thompson, Val Pope and Greg Lavey all lively and Rozynski and Wenham dominating the clearances. The Magpies blew a golden opportunity to make it 5 straight and break the Hornets back but a intercepted centering pass in the Magpies forward 50 and rebounded for a goal at the other end signalling a pivotal change in momentum. Some undisciplined free kicks and 50 meter penalties and in a blink of an eye the hornets had nailed 6 goals straight to go to the final break 15 points to the good.
Both teams came out in the last quarter firing to get the 4 premiership points and the ball rebounded back and forth from end to end but eventually it was the Hornets that broke through with the first two goals of the quarter extending the lead to 27 points. Although the Magpies battled hard and kicked a couple of majors they were unable to make significant inroads to the lead which was 30 points at the final siren.
