Tigers 14.13-97 d Swans 11.12-78
The Tweed Coast Tigers have opened
there 2010 account with a gutsy win over the Lismore Swans on Saturday at home
in front of a large vocal crowd.
A great week of training on the back
of a narrow Rd 1 defeat by Byron saw the Tigers frothing for a first home win
against the team that knocked them out of the finals last season.
Newly appointed Captain Jai won the
toss and elected to run with the breeze in the first quarter, a nervous Tigers
played some messy football and inaccurate kicking saw the Tigers only lead by 5
points at the first break.
Lismore then kicked into gear with the
wind at their backs and their running centres delivering opportunities to their
star forward Wes who kicked 4 goals for the term. Things looked menacing for
the Tigers going into the half time break 20 points down.
However a steely half time discussion
by Coach Shags and Captain Jai which questioned the teams hardness compared to
the 2009 season, saw a big change in intensity.
Across the park the Tigers lifted with
Arty, Popey and first gamer Brent in the backline consistently rebounding Lismore's attacks and the running centres
of Arnold, Johnno, Nugget and Westy combined with ruckman Strope and Jacob to
serve up some tasty possession to the big forwards. Roundy, Tits and Bolty capitalised
on the quality service dominating the Swans backmen and taking some strong
marks which resulted in goals.
At 3 quarter time the Tigers were 10
points up and a tough final quarter was predicted with the Swans having the assistance
of the strong Potty Dr breeze.
The Tigers came out firing, determined
not to go down in another close game and kicked the first 2 goals of the
quarter to basically wrap up the contest.
All in all a great game of football in
front of a big home crowd that saw the Tigers victorious by 19 points at
fulltime.
Hats off to Club President Col, for
putting together such a great day for all.
Huge thanks to all the volunteers who
donated their time, the team support staff and of course the fantastic home
crowd.
