It may not have been pretty but Diggers Rest is on the winners list after a 25 point round one win in the Riddell District Football League at the weekend.
The Burras spread the goal kicking load between 10 players in its 14.7(91) to 10.6(66) win against Woodend-Hesket.
A burst in the first quarter and the last proved the difference between the teams, the Hawks got within three points in the final term before Diggers Rest kicked away.
The first quarter burst for Diggers Rest gave it a 19 point lead at quarter time, leaving Woodend- Hesket to play catch up footy for the rest of the afternoon. Diggers Rest had four two goal contributors as no player took control of the forward line.
Ruck combination Daniel Poynton and Lindsay Black were standouts for Diggers Rest, the former taking a number of marks around the ground and at half foward.
Long kicking half back Jason Davies was also an important player for the Burras.
"It wasn't an open or fast game," Diggers Rest coach Glenn Hopkins said.
The game was a bit of a stalemate, not a lot happened. it was only the first quarter and in the last quarter where we kicked three or four goals quickly that we dominated.
"I think we had more experienced runners, they (Wooodend-Hesket) had a lot of young kids playing."
"The ground was heavy so you had to get close to the packs, they were able to get in and under and beat us to the ball until we got our defensive sweeper working."
