Long serving Canberra District player, Sean 'Ego' Egan played his 200th club game on Sunday against Yass at Jamison.
Coming through both junior clubs, Ego's beginnings at the senior club were less than auspicious, breaking his arm in his first contest in his first game of under 19 football back in 1996. Since that time he has developed through the under 19 and short lived under 21 sides, moving through to the Canberra District sides.
In that time he has come runner up best a fairest a couple of times and also made the Canberra District Rep side. He claims two highlights from his time at the club - the club winning their first senior premiership is only topped by his winning the Canberra Districts grand final with a great group of blokes in 2006 - even if he feels he let himself and his team down with his poor showing at the celebrations afterwards!
When speaking with him, Ego shared his opinion that a footy club should be a real community that needs people putting in around the place - not just turning up on the weekend and pulling on the jumper. He reckons that the great thing being around a place like Belconnen is the efforts people make behind the scenes to make sure six teams get on the park each week and plans to be a larger part of it in the future when his playing days are done.
Ego had no advice for junior players just starting their career other than saying 'enjoy your footy, enjoy your mates and most of all enjoy being a part of the BMFC community'
When asked how he had managed to keep going for 14 years he said "anyone who has played with me knows I am fanatical about looking after myself and taking care of my body. Doing all the right things after the game, eating the right food and really putting 100% into training really stands me in good stead"
Although that answer is clearly a made up load of garbage, the fact that he has been around for 200 games with barely an injury shows that he must be doing something right - or is just lazy. With no plans of retiring in the near future, 'not before buzzy and skip anyway', his fat little head will be a fixture around the club for a while yet.
