We
(Website) We
know you put in an extraordinary amount of time and effort to the club. Would you describe a
typical week's inputs to training, game preparation, game day, recovery,
administration, player management etc etc..
CS (Coach Smith) Well the season started
way back in the second week of February with training being held three nights a
week. We concentrated on skills and fitness at the club on Mondays and Fridays; with Wednesdays being a night of cross training at venues such as North
Burleigh and Kurrawa. From mid February we went back to two nights a week with
the fortnightly Saturday morning session introduced.
This year I’ve endeavoured to incorporate our warm up and
skills together at training, with game based drills following so that near everything
we do is related to the style we want to play.
With the season proper now upon us we will incorporate the
Monday recovery session which will be used for both recovery and review. I
would have thought though, if the players are fair dinkum about getting
themselves cherry ripe for the following week they will be hitting the ocean on
the Sunday or Monday following a game in their own time as well. I’ve got no
doubt that the players who give themselves half an hour in the ocean will be
ahead of those who don’t.
In terms of time for team selection, how long is a piece of
string or a Stawell Gift track? See response below on best 22.
We What are the responsibilities of semi professional contracted
players to the club, themselves, their team mates and supporters?
CS As a
semi-professional coach some of my expectations on myself are to,
1. Plan/implement and attend all training sessions from pre
season till season end.
2. Listen, learn and adapt to changing coaching styles and
philosophies.
3. Conduct myself in a professional manner that would be
becoming of a senior coach and leader of any sporting organisation.
4. Endeavour to assist and develop all players to be the
best players they can be for the Broadbeach AFL Club.
If I weren’t doing these things I’d expect the club to say
“On your bike Smithy!” Mine, and more importantly, the entire club’s
expectations should be the same on any contracted (paid) players when it comes
to training/playing and representing the club in a positive manner.
We What is the most frustrating aspect of coaching a semi pro team?
CS Sometimes
lack of commitment/professionalism from those involved. Uninformed and
knowledge lacking, hangers-on, who decide to voice their unrespected opinions
through the bottom of a schooner, (small minority in this group). But all in
all, it’s a great challenge and something you take on if you’ve got a passion for the game.
We. You put a
lot into player development in 2009 - over 50% of our list was under 18. What
are the positives from that policy? Who are the particular 2009 younger players who you
expect to make major impacts in 2010?
CS We’re
certainly anticipating that all players develop and improve from last year.
Obviously the younger ones should have gained by the experience of playing senior
football and with natural physical growth will be better suited for the
physical aspect of playing AFL.
T Rolfe, Searl, L Frawley, Dienjes, Quick, Green, MacKenzie,
Barrile, Oelhman, Wilkinson; these are just some of the 18/19 year olds who
we’ll be looking to play a role in 2010.
I’m excited by the next age group Zorko, Pantics, Lyons, Russell,
Cooke, A Rolfe, Stewart, Derrick and Emblem. These blokes have played enough
games of QAFL now and have the experience to not only be good players for Broadbeach
but also forge a reputation as being dominant footballers in the competition.
This is the group who need to take the next step for us to become more than
just a competitive team.
We What will be the 2010 playing policy for under 18s in terms of doubling up and reserves games?
CS All
things being equal if a player from the u18 plays on the Saturday, they won’t
be playing on the Sunday. Unfortunately we can’t control injuries as the year
progresses.
We It's not easy to select
our best 22 - all things being equal - to put on the park in 2010, but how many
new heads are likely to run out in
the opener? Care to name any at this stage?
CS It’s
fair to say the magnets are thrown around quite a bit throughout the week
leading into games. We need to be aware of players who have had limited game
time due to injury, unavailability and lack of fitness. And than there are the
other variables, including form,
attitude, and training attendance/performance. All this has been tracked and
observed which is necessary in making the correct selection decisions.
Assistant coaches are used for feedback and opinion on all
things concerned within these areas, with the physios also providing constant
updates on the progress of injured players.
AFLQ provides coverage of all games so having access to
this helps in selection with match ups and opposition strengths/weaknesses.
With recovery on a Monday this year it will also give the players the chance to
view good points as well as bad from the previous round, with more good than bad
being the plan!
Preseason form, attendance, attitude, ability, fitness,
match ups etc.... will all be considered when selecting a round 1 team in both
seniors and reserves. It’s a bloody long season and I’m looking forward to see
how the boys respond whether they play seniors,reserves,18’s or if they miss
selection altogether. With the supplementary list we’ve got a total of 70
players listed with the cats. Obviously all these players will not be available
on a weekly basis, but at the moment it’s a great position to be in when
selecting 45 players to run out. It’s fair to say there’ll be new faces this
week but you’ll just have to wait until the teams are announced to see who they
are.
We Under what
circumstances are you likely to lose it and really pay out on the playing
group? Do you plan for such an occasion?
CS If they
question the attributes and qualities of the young blood nuts amongst the
group.
We Cricket or football?
CS Darts.
We How excited are you to have a couple of
red headed players vying for places this season?
CS What do
you mean vying for positions! They’re as certain as the mighty Blues giving
your mob a grand arse kicking every time they meet.
We Can you explain why an intelligent person would
support the Carlton football team?
CS I can’t
believe a We of your pedigree could barrack for a team who once contained the whiz!
