On Friday 12th March, the Mt Burr oval was officially renamed and is now known as “The Mick and Jean Walker Oval”.
It was suggested by the current Mt Burr Football Committee that the gesture be made on behalf of the local community to recognise many years of service by the devoted Mt McIntyre couple.
Their interest in community events has not been restricted to sport but also church, RSL, school and other activities.
Mt Burr Football Club President Stephen Finch summed up the feelings of the community with the following statement.
“Mick and Jean embody the spirit of not only the Mt Burr sporting clubs but of the wider community. It is fitting that the hub of Mt Burr, the oval, be named after such pillars of the community”.
His remarks were endorsed by Mt Burr Cricket Club president Klaus Kanahs.
“They are the most upstanding pair of citizens and have the most loyal supporters of cricket at Mt Burr. Mick was a player of note and they have been patrons and trophy donors and never miss a match”.
The move to honour the couple was officially backed early in March by the Wattle Range Council at its monthly meeting.
The announcement was made on Friday night prior to the Cricket Club Annual Presentations at the community hall. It was jointly made by local sporting group Presidents, Stephen Finch, Klaus Kanahs and Lisa Scott of the football, cricket and netball clubs respectively.
The Walkers have been synonymous with the Mt Burr community for more than 60 years.
