Aspley’s band of highly-rated recruits were all to the fore as the Hornets ran over the top of Labrador in their QAFL practice match at Graham Road last night.
Played in blustery conditions that made controlling the football difficult, there was little between the two sides all night before a six-goal-to-nil final term saw the Hornets run out 10.9 (69) to 5.6 (36) victors.
Aspley were delighted with the showing of Geelong League key defender Matt Trewhella, while young midfielder Jamie Sheehan showed plenty of class and versatile key position player Sean Tighe kicked three goals.
Ovens and Murray midfielder Matt Shir and key defender Tyson Hartwig were also prominent for the home side.
Labrador showed plenty of good signs in the first half, leading by two points at the main break before both teams rested some key players.
The Tigers were dominated the opening term into the wind and could not convert the opportunities they had, while Apley did not take advantage of their dominance to open with a slender two-goal lead.
Brisbane recruit Tim Notting was lively for Labrador, particularly early, while former Morningside wingman James Booth gave plenty to his new club.
Jason Howard, a fast-finishing second in the Tigers’ best and fairest last season, looks set for a big year in his second winter with Labrador.
The good news for Aspley was the way they finished, with the Hornets gelling well in their first outing under new coach Russell Harding.
