Day Camp
Thirty five players attended the
Day Camp at Broadbeach last Saturday. Some reasonably rigorous training was
conducted at the primary school ground and on the foreshore in competition with
the Queensland lifesaving titles.
Things were a bit confused on the
beachfront, and Ryan Clough, who was chasing down a biikini clad lifesaver,
inadvertently won the state beach sprint title! And to further embarrass
Queensland Lifesaving, Aaron Rolfe, who thought he was back in Mowbury Park
colours, took out the state flag race.
Squizz won the musical tennis balls
at the Broadbeach Football Club level.
The players enjoyed a beneficial
day including some ‘classroom’ activities exploring expectations of zone and
line plays, other team rules with regard to discipline, rotations, match ups,
etc. And prior to disbanding to Brannigans, each player was invited to submit
to Coach Smith a list of seven nominees for the leadership group. Results of
Smithy and assistant coach deliberations will emerge over the next few weeks.
Some photos of the Day Camp 2010, including David Glassop's impersonation of Tony Abbot in the old budgie smugglers, can be found on the ‘Caught in the Act’ page.
Some New Faces
Marcie: Didn’t
pick up her last name but Marcie has joined the medical staff, we would think, direct
from Hawaii.
David Round: Has
agreed to pass on some of the finer and not so fine points of ruck work to our
playing list. David is not so much a new face, but he will be working with
some.
Lachlan Treacher: is one who will work with Roundy. Lachy has
an elite tennis background on international circuits where he was very
competitive. His physical development
– he has a job providing shade for the giraffe enclosure at the Brisvegas zoo –
forced him to consider alternative sports. With a father from Victoria, aussie
rules seemed like a good place to start and his 2000mm, 85kg frame is well
suited to the ruck. In the practice game at Coolangatta his tennis agility was
obvious and when he develops a sense of where to be on the deck, we’re thinking
he’ll become a more than competitive elite ruckman. A fit young man, currently
studying a Diploma of Fitness at TAFE, there is plenty of time given a birth
year of 1990.
Ben Williams: A North
Melbourne supporter from Adelaide. Figure that one out. Ben, born in 1986,
standing at 177cm and weighing in at 83 kg, tore his Achilles and missed season
2009. Prior to that he was on Norwood’s target list and ended up playing under
Gary McIntosh (of Ireland v Australia fame) in Division I of the amateurs. A
midfield/forward type Ben is completing a double degree in physiotherapy and
exercise science at Griffith University. One or both of those will be handy
when he establishes his own personal training service.
Tom Reid: From
North Hobart, Tom notched up 13 games in the seniors in his first year. From a small
family in a fishing town, Tom (born 1991, Ht 179, Wt 80kg) came directly from a
traditional sporting school, Hutchins Grammar, to North Hobart. A right sided
midfielder, he has come to the coast looking for a change in lifestyle. Single
and looking for a partner; unemployed and looking for a labouring position, Tom has already developed a healthy
disrespect for Southport .
Jaran Pantic: An
experienced QAFL player with 60 odd games with Redlands seniors. Jaran is
enjoying the pre season at Broadie and is hot to trot for the season proper. At
23 and sporting a fit 181/84 mature body, Jaran will provide the Cats drive
through the lines and experience in tight situations. A keen surfer, single and
on the lookout, Jaran is looking for a career in media presentation as soon as
gets over his ambition to master Bahasa Indonesia and woo the Bali ladies.
Patrick Squire: From
West Perth where he was mates with Cloughy and Mitch Andrews which immediately
brands him as “different”. Over the journey, Patrick has played 80 senior games
with Ocean Ridge and 8 in the magoos at West Perth in 2009. Coming in at
190/87, Patrick is currently a relieving secondary school Phys Ed teacher
looking for a full time position and describes himself as a utility player. Another
mature body at 25 years old, we will be looking to Patrick to break a few packs
and force the contest both in the air and at deck level.
Tom Balcombe: (1991,
171/70) Another youngster from North Hobart. Tom comes with an impressive CV
and big wraps from those in the know. Played 15 senior games in his rookie
season, won state representation and found time to put in 10 games with Tassie
Mariners. A left sided player, with a classic kicking action in the mould of a Malceski off the back
line, Tom should provide penetrating ball into the forward zone. Currently
unemployed and looking for labouring work in between looking for a partner.
Other New Faces will be introduced
as we track ‘em down. Particularly interested in the Ball Magnet from Bachus
Marsh.
