1969 2nd Semi
Newstead 14 . 8 . 92 defeated Dunolly 13 . 12 . 90
In a very high standard game at Carisbrook, Newstead scored a 2 point win.
1st Quarter It was a typical final atmosphere with both teams taking time to settle down. Play was fast in the opening stages, but the first goal did not come until the 12 minute mark when Ron Deledio kicked truly. Dooly quickly followed with another but cross got Newstead going with a goal. Dunolly were showing superior teamwork and when Beasy goaled they looked good. The Cross and O'Grady (N) goaled.
2nd Quarter Dunolly had Hurford at CHF and Heenan at half back, and Newstead coach Williams in the centre in an attempt to counter Raselli who was giving Dunolly a great game. Each team kicked three goals for the quarter.
Late in the quarter Clive Heenan was applauded by all sections of the large crowd when he pulled down mark of the year. He rose high over a pack to grab the mark with his feet on an opponents shoulders but he fell very heavily and was shaken for some time.
3rd Quarter Dunolly opened strongly with the dangerous Dooly kicking 3 for the quarter. Dunolly lost ruckman Deledio during the quarter.
4th quarter It was goal for goal first Oliver (N), Beasy (D) and then Cross (N) and it was a 5 point game. Williams goaled to put Newstead in front and Townsing marked in front but he could only manage a point and Newstead held on grimly for a 2 point win.

Preliminary Final
Dunolly 11 . 13 . 79 defeated Royal Park 6 . 11 . 47
The feature of the game was Dunolly's excellent teamwork. Royal Park did not look like extending Dunolly who lead throughout.
1st Quarter Using there good pace Dunolly scored goals through Hutchins and Beasy. As the quarter progressed , Raselli began to show out in the centre but both defences were on top. Chapman and B. Polinelli were solid on the back flanks while Dewhirst and Wilson were effectively blanketing League top goal kicker Townsing were doing well for Park.
2nd Quarter While Royal Park had the breeze, Dunolly with superior teamwork, accurate passing and doing well in the air, Dunolly went further ahead. Dunolly attacked persistently to add goals by Heenan, Peart and Polinelli. Raselli was in everything but Partridge and Hovey scored goals just before the end of the quarter. However Heenan replied with a goal from a great snap.
3rd Quarter On resumption G. Polinelli and Lennen (RP) each goaled. When Lanfranchi goaled Dunolly was up by 33 points. Wilson still held Townsing goalless but it was difficult to understand why Dunolly persisted in sending the ball in high which suited Wilson who had a clear advantage in height and reach.
4th Quarter Park had Wilson on the ball and he quickly made his presence felt. However, Townsing broke away from his new opponent Large to snap a great goal and when Lanfranchi kicked truly Dunolly led by 35 points.

Although Dunolly led by nine points at ½ time, Carisbrook's strength gave them the edge in the second half to give them a good 12 points win. Midway through this game there were 65 cars parked around the fence which is a good interest in the Under 14 section.

Grand Final
Dunolly 11 . 6 . 72 defeated Newstead 9 . 12 . 66
The teams staged a tremendous battle before Dunolly emerged victorious by 6 points in a thrilling finish. From start to finish there was little between the teams, the lead changed countless times. With less than five minutes to play the scores were level and a draw seemed inevitable but in the last 2 minutes 19th man Ron Cole goaled to give Dunolly the flag. The win was a great tribute to the Dunolly committee and coach Ron Deledio

Newstead took the field as selected but Dunolly made a number of changes. J. Peart was at CHF C. Heenan was at CHB, Hurford on a HB and Hutchins was on a forward flank. Umpire Trevor Plier had charge of the game and was always in firm control and handled the close hard game well.
1st Quarter In the opening stages of the game play was scrambly as neither team handled the wet conditions well. Newstead posted the first score of the match a snap by Cross for a point which was followed by another. Dunolly worked the ball forward for a point and then at the 8 minute mark Dooly steered a long punt to post the first goal of the match. From a free Cross had the chance to kick Newstead's first goal but he missed. Neither team showed much system in their play. The defences were on top to the degree that neither side could manage a score for the last 10 minutes of the quarter.
2nd Quarter Newstead went straight into attack as the second term opened. A free to Oliver who passed to Strong for a goal. The game was starting to liven up and both teams were displaying great pace, but Newstead were playing better at this stage. After J. Polinelli added a point, O'Grady did the same for Newstead but he quickly made amends with a strong mark and goal. Newstead were in front by 7 points.
Showing a lot of dash Dunolly flashed the ball forward for Peart to goal. Newstead launched a number of attacks but they couldn't break through Dunolly's defence where Watts was playing particularly well. A strong mark by Jones and 2 screamers by M. Fyffe resulted only in points for Newstead. To show the use of accurate kicking Beasy snapped truly to give Dunolly back the lead.
From a free and a 15 yard penalty M. Fyffe goaled which was followed by Strong and Oliver gave Newstead a 17 point lead at half time.
3rd Quarter must have inspired his side at the interval for as play resumed they showed much greater determination. Britten who was shading Dodson on the wing shot a pass to Townsing who marked and goaled. Seconds later Townsing now coming up the ground gained possession and got the ball to Dooly who snapped truly. The Newstead defence seemed confused as their opponents made quick switches around the forward line and when Deledio marked strongly and goaled, Dunolly was back in front.
Newstead rallied but their kicking let them down as Strong, Cross and Jones all kicked points. When Hurford (who was now on a forward flank) slipped in to goal the lead had again changed hands. Then Sartori dashed into an open goal to put Newstead in front. The big crowd roared their approval as both teams hurled themselves into the play in an attempt to gain a break before ¾ time a desperate last quarter was expected.
4th Quarter The atmosphere was tense in the opening minutes of the last quarter both teams had chances but lost them by kicking out of bounds on the full. The Dunolly supporters were shocked when Deledio was carried off the field with what looked like a bad leg injury but their hopes were lifted as Townsing goaled from a free to snatch the lead. Twice Dunolly defenders kicked out on the full but Newstead could not score.
The wily Lanfranchi now playing well marked strongly in defence and sent Dunolly forward where Dooly pulled down a great mark and after a penalty took him closer to goal gave his side a valuable 9 point lead. It was far from over when as Jones marked well and on an angle brought Newstead back to within three points with a fine kick.
Both sides launched desperate attacks but the only result was a point through Hurford, until Lanfranchi using his great experience to advantage snapped a goal and then saw his next shot pushed through for a further point. When Cole passed to Townsing for a further point, Dunolly was 12 points up; they appeared to have the game in their keeping.
With time running out Newstead made a desperate effort to win the game and when M. Fyffe goaled from a free and Cross kicked truly, the crowd wondered where the replay would be played. A timely mark by Garsed kept Dunolly out.
Graeme Polinelli marked Garsed's kick and he shot the ball in where 19th man Cole gained possession and raced around the flank to kick a great goal.
With less than 2 minutes remaining two weary mud splattered teams who had staged a tremendous match and given the large crowd much more than their money's worth battled desperately, but when the siren sounded it was Dunolly's flag.
Best Neville Britten won well on the wing all day, Bernie Polinelli brilliant in the back half where he repeatedly saved and cleared with great dash. Graeme Watts was safe and cool in defence. Neville Dooly roved well and kicked 3 goals. Others to do well Bernie Lanfranchi, Clive Heenan, Graeme Polinelli and Richard Raselli
