At the last change Dunolly led by only 4 points and the stage was set for a thrilling finish. Dunolly however finished too strongly in the concluding stages. Dunolly gained a tight grip on the game in the second quarter when it increased its quarter time lead from 6 to 16 points. In the third quarter Brook arrested the initiative scoring 3.1 to 1.1 but it nullified its efforts with too much short passing.
Carisbrook lost the premiership because it failed to capitalise on its opportunities up forward. Dunolly full back Graeme Watts was the player that stood between Brook and the premiership. He defended grandly throughout the game. With Watts far too good for Vin Dam and Tim Bowman keeping a close watch on centre half forward Alan Shearer, Brook never seemed likely to kick a big score.
Star rover Doug Nalder who Brook looked to for its main drive played patchy. He kicked three goals but never looked dangerous. With its name players covered it was left to the Cain brothers, John Symons, Don Hooper, John McKenzie, Peter O'Shea and Max Palmer to keep Brook in the game. Dunolly coach Kevin Ryan played a real captain's game. He rucked and marked well. Veteran Arthur Lacey was kept well in check by Don Hooper who played soundly. Lacey moved to a half forward flank in the 3rd quarter.
Dunolly Best Players:: G. WATTS starred at full back repulsing attacks with regularly monotony. RYAN was always in the picture. He shouldered the burden of the heavy work and rucked and marked well. T. WATTS was busy and tenacious and always doing something useful. Others to show up were BOWMAN, WILKINSON and BRITTEN.
Carisbrook Best Players: Symons, R. Cain, G. Cain, Hooper, McKenzie, P. O'Shea and Palmer
The Dunolly coach Kevin Ryan said his team's premiership win this season climaxed probably one of the club's most memorable seasons. The team had to battle hard throughout the season and at one stage was in danger of losing its place in the four. “Fortunately we kicked on at the right stage to win our way through an interesting final series. The coach attributed Dunolly's success to a team effort by players and committee. He said the club this season didn't have the reserves of other years. He paid tribute to the assistance of the juniors under the guidance of Fred Britten. “Our juniors did well and I am sure Dunolly can look confidently into the future.” Mr. Ryan was loud in his praise for the efforts of the Dunolly ladies committee. He said no football club could function without a ladies committee. During the evening the committee presented the club with a cheque for 250 pounds.
