Angus to Coach Cats
Fresh from signing gun full forward Jason Eagle from Shepparton United, the
Broadbeach Cats have announced the appointment of Matt Angus as Senior Coach
for the 2011 season.
Angus arrived on the Gold Coast from Western Australia at the start of
the 2010 season and immediately took up a role at Broadbeach as Assistant Coach
to Adrian Smith.
Angus has a solid background in coaching having led Claremont Colts in
2004 – 2006 and again in 2009. Prior to coaching Colts, he looked
after the Claremont development squad.
His coaching at Claremont reaped enormous success with 4 premierships in
both junior and Colts.
Along the way, Angus has coached a plethora of now AFL players - the
likes of Harry O’Brien (Collingwood) , Beau Wilkes (West Coast), Mitch Morton
(Richmond), Jarryd Morton (Hawthorn), Nathan Krakouer (Port Adelaide/ Gold
Coast) , Ryan Brabazon (Sydney Swans), Alan Toovey (Collingwood), Eric
Mackenzie (West Coast), Liam Bedford (West Coast), Nat Fyfe (Freemantle), Travis
Colyer (Essendon), Gerrick Weedon (West Coast), Lewis Broome (West Coast and
Ryan Neates (West Coast).
Angus is both excited and anxious in leading the Cats in 2011.
“I am looking forward to the challenge ahead’, he said. “There is plenty
of talent already at Broadbeach and an outstanding number of younger players
coming through. With the addition of Jason Eagle and another few key positional
players that we are hoping to secure in the near future and a commitment to a
strong pre-season, I can see the Club making significant improvement in 2011”.
“Changes are certainly underway at Broadbeach and there are exciting times
ahead both an on off the field”, Angus said.
Whilst engaged to lead the senior Football Club, Angus is keen to assist
and use his vast experience in the development of the junior program at
Broadbeach. The Club has a history of developing outstanding young talent and
in 2010, produced 5 state players at the Under 16 State Level including captain
Andrew Boston. It was the same Under 18 State Level, where the Club again
produced 5 State players including captain, and now Gold Coast Sun player, Joel
Wilkinson.
