DUNOLLY will this Saturday unveil its prized mid-season recruit - former Collingwood and Sydney AFL livewire Robbie Ahmat. Dunolly coach James McNamee confirmed yesterday Ahmat would line up for the Eagles in their home clash at Deledio Reserve against Talbot in round 11 of the Maryborough-Castlemaine District Football League.
A clearance for Ahmat was lodged on Tuesday - the final day for transfers for the 2009 season.
With his signing at Dunolly, Ahmat is the second AFL player the Eagles have secured this year, following North Melbourne 1999 premiership player Shannon Motlop joining the club in late March. “The clearance has been ticked off and right to go, so Robbie is definitely right for this weekend,”
McNamee said. “It’s great news for the club and we’re all really excited about it.” Ahmat, now 31, spent seven years in the AFL from 1995 to 2001.He was at Collingwood from 1995 to 1997, where he played 25 games and kicked 22 goals.
At the end of the 1997 season Ahmat was traded to the Sydney Swans in exchange for Clinton King and Stuart Mangin. In his four seasons at Sydney between 1998 and 2001, Ahmat played 42 games for the Swans and kicked 46 goals.
A silky forward with blistering pace, Ahmat is best remembered for his memorable goal against North Melbourne at the SCG in round 20, 2000.
From a stoppage, the ball spilled to Ahmat, who had four bounces down the wing, overcame an awry bounce, and goaled from 35m out, with commentator Bruce McAvaney describing it as “one of the greats of all time”.
Ahmat played with Southern Districts in the Northern Territory AFL competition last summer, while last year he coached St George in the Sydney Football League.
