The hottest July night so far is what greeted the 6-0 Etobicoke Kangaroos as they prepared for their battle against the 1-5 High Park Demons in the 3rd intsalement of Friday Night football for the 2009 OAFL season. In a game that didn't really excite the crowd that had gathered to cheer on their local hero's, the Kangaroos home by 31 points.
A couple of last minute changes to the team due to injury and a player arriving late to the ground would normaly unsettle most teams but not the 2009 edition of the Etobicoke Kangaroos. A good tap out of the middle by Jeff Wingrove followed by a great pass to the leading forward Adam Jacobs who kicked straight and the boys were away to a quick start. Further goals to Colin Mark, Justin Harris and again by Adam Jacobs and a 21 point lead was a good start after 20 minutes.
Over the years the Etobicoke and High Park encounters have had some tough encounters with each club moving in opposite directions both on and off the field. These 2 clubs have had 7 previous meeting with Etobicoke holding a 4--3 edge over their nearest suburban rival. With the majority of the play the 'Roos could only add 3 goals for the term from Jeff Vance x 2 and Adam Jacobs while poor kicking added 9 behinds. Strong defensive play by Logan Chambers, Andrew Ford, Damian Smakalata and Justin Rigney kept the High Park Demons scoreless for the term. Roos by 48 points at the long break.
As has been the norm in these situations where a big lead has been achieved at 1/2 time coach Emile Studham made many changes to give his newer players some quality playing time. With a restructured forward and backline the 3rd term started with the Demons looking to bridge the gap. The Demons sensing some changes kept the pressure on and managed to dominate the 20 minutes with the only score for the club being a goal from a 50 meter penalty to Kyle Girardo.
In a 2nd half of football that failed to reach any highs, it was the self commentary from Sam Bates ("Ohh great kick JR" before the ball had reached him) on a great unorthodox pass from Justin Rigney that provided the only real high for the term. On top of that "Master" Bates managed to kick 2 goals for the quarter to help his side out score the Demons to end up winning by 31 points.
We get break from playing at home for 1 week as we travel up the 427 next Saturday July 18th for 2 games of great football. The Div 2 game starts at 2pm against the Quebec Saints, then its 1st vs 10th at 3pm as Etobicoke and the Ottawa Swans fight it out.
