Fantastic weather awaited the Etobicoke Kangaroos Division 1 and 2 teams as they again headed East but this time only as far as the border of Toronto to play the Broadview Hawks in 2 games. The setting this week was the Scarborugh campus of the University of Toronto where the Broadview Hawks had made their nest for the last 2 years.
The local media had billed this game as the match of the week as both clubs had recruited very well during the off season and had 2 good wins leading ito round 3. A win for either team would put them a firm favourites for the 2009 OAFL premiership.
Coach Emile Studham had implored his men to come out fast and strong something the boys from Etobicoke are not known for. Fast is what they achieved with Travis Mckenzie taking a great pack mark and goaling and Murray Lovett doing the same to put a smile on the coaching staff's face before Broadview go one back. Another goal to McKenzie and a great long bomb from Justin Harris gave the Royal Blue and White a 15 point lead after 1st of 4 quarters.
Now a fast start is only good if you keep and build on it. Build on they did with Travis McKenzie and Justin Harris adding their 3rd and 2nd respectively before the hawks hit back with 3 goals. The hawks power forward Shutts was doing the things that all coaches like, leading marking and goaling and proving to be his sides only avanue to goal. Christian Harbour goaled with great snap on the run and Justin Harris goaled again for his 3rd and then we now had a 22 point lead at the long break.
With the breeze picking up at the works yard end the Hawks were confident they could bridge the gap with the 4 goal aide blowing towards their end. In a dogged 20 minutes the boys knuckled down to not only hold the Hawks with great defece from Mike Langer, Kyle Bridsen and Adam Jacobs but build their lead with great goals again by Travis McKenzie and Justin Harris. These 2 are proving that with quality men around them they are unstoppable when hot. The Roos up by 29 points with 20 minutes left.
With the game almost in the bag one could think that the men might take their foot off the pedal, not with this playing group as they set about distancing themslves from the OAFL pack. With the aid of a slight breeze Etobicoke banged home another 4 goals with great running left foot snaps from the boundary by Luke Lombardini and Travis McKenzie before Justin Harris now resting at Full Forward used his experience and bulging biceps to out muscle his opponent on 2 occasions to mark srtongly and goal.
The Etobicoke Kangaroos home by 47 points in a great win to sit in 2nd spot on the OAFL table undefeated. This now sets up a top of the table clash with the Toronto Dingos who are also undefeated and sit in 1st place. Be sure to get to Colanel Sam Smith Park (Humber South) early next week to get the best seat in the house for this one. Game gets underway on Friday June 12th at 6.45pm, beverages and BBQ will be there on the night.

Division 2 Report
Surrounded by tall trees and nestled in a valley the Division 2 lads prepared for their 1st game of the 2009 Division 2 season. This is the first time the club has put a 2nd team on the ground and after consulting with the Braodview club it was decied that 12 a side would be the plan for this game. The game started and it was Alex McDonald who picked up a winning tap from Jake Vella and kick long to the open goal to become a trivia question as the 1st player to kick a goal in Division 2 for the club after only 15 seconds. The game sure goes quick when you play 4 x 12 minute quarters but Brenden Ryan still found time to get on the board kicking truely before the siren went. Boys down by 1 point at the first break.
Jake Vella was winning the ruck but we were finding it tough to get the ball out of the middle, some great defence by Nick McKinely, Dave Clarke, Damian Smektala and Mike Clelland kept the game close as Colin Mark was are only goal scorer for the quater after he marked strongly. Boys down by 11 at the long break.
Some adjustments and the boys looked to come out strong with Peter McKittrick and Jeff Vance moving into the middle and Alec Alipanopolous moving to a Half Forward Flank gave us some movement. It was great goal by young Brenton Harbour after good ground work by Greg Everett who flicked out a handball to the fast running Harbour who spilt the big sticks for the only goal of the term. The Divvy 2 boys now only down by 9 points.
A big last quarter was needed to get a win and Brenden Ryan goaled qucikly the close the gap to 3 points and then Mike Clelland marked and goaled for the boys to hit the front. The Hawks hit back fast to take back the lead and thats where it stayed as the Broadview hawks held on to win by 3 points.
