Two Dandenong Stingrays players, Aaron Purves and Tom Gillies, were named in the TAC Cup Team of the Year last weekend at the Morrish Medal awards night.
Tom Gilles was named at Full Back following a fine season taking on a beating the best of the opposition forwards. Gillies also picked up 7 Morrish medal votes including a best on ground performance against the Western jets in Round 10 and picking up 2 votes in 2 other games. Gillies attacking style sees him leading the Stingrays in Rebound 50m, marks from opposition kicks and has the highest number of running bounces fro the Stingrays backmen.
Aaron Purves was named at Full Forward after kicking 36 goals in the home and away games, and another 2 on the weekend in the first final. Purves finished tied for 8th in the Morrish Medal and picked up 11 votes including best on grounds against Geelong Falcons, Northern Knights and Bendigo Pioneers. Purves has been the key forward for the Stingrays all year and has been the number one target for the Stingrays for the year inside 50m
Both Purves and Gillies are products of the Eumemmerring Secondary Sports Academy where students can do football as a Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 subject as part of a Sport and Recreation certificate. The sports academy has been going for 3 years and if the form of Purves and Gillies is any indication, it will be producing its first AFL graduate in the very near future to go along with the two Melbourne Storm under 20 graduates from earlier this year.
