Over 150 people packed into the Sherwood District Australian Football Social Club on Friday Night for what was an outstanding evenings entrtainment and everybody left praising the event. The Western Magpies would like to thank the K Factor and Justin Karcher for making the organisation and operation of the evening so easy. The Western Magpies AFC would recomend using the K Factor to anyone as it is fundraising made easy.
The night began with MC Justin Karcher having some fun with Magpies President Brian Knight before he invited the imposing figure of the great Joel Garner up to the microphone for an interveiw that was highlighted by some inside stories from the West Indies golden era although Big Bird was happy to avoid discussing his teams First Test performances on Day Two at the GABBA.
You could hear a pin drop in the room of 150 when AFL Legend Ron Barassi took the microphone as the whole room hung on every word of the great man as he discussed everything from his relationship with Norm Smith, the present and future of the Melbourne Football Club, the expansion of the AFL, how North Melbourne swooped on the 10 year rule and much more. He even ended the night with his own commical rendition of the Collingwood theme song.
Then with all respect to Barassi and Garner the highlight of the evening was no doubt Rodney Hogg who took hold of the microphone like he was steaming in off the long run in his hay day with some classic tales from the classic days of Australian Cricket the 70's and 80's and had the room in raptures of laughter for the best part of 45 minutes.
Finally the auctions were well supported by those in attendance and some classic pieces of momorabilia were purchased and some significant funds were raised for the football club in the process.
The Western Magpies would like to thank all of those that purchased tickets and supported this event and in particular those that purchased auction items, Mick McEvoy and his staff from behid the bar, Anne Mitchell and her kitchen staff for first class meals and service, Dan More for his organisation of the raffle and those that acted as spotters and displayers during the auction.
Photos from the evening can be viewed in the photo gallery.
Keep an eye out for further events at the Western Magpies including the possible return of Fred Brophy's Boxing Tent in 2010.
