Three TAC Cup teams have won a funding boost for their clubs through the Transport Accident Commission’s L120 Program.
Gippsland Power, Northern Knights and the North Ballarat Rebels were presented with their $1,000 prizes at the Morrish Medal on Sunday September 13.
The TAC’s Road Safety Manager Samantha Cockfield said the L120 Program was part of the partnership with AFL Victoria, under which the TAC Cup players are encouraged to practice their skills on the roads as well as on the football field.
"For the first time in 2009, each team worked with a local community group to create a road safety advertisement," Ms Cockfield said.
"Players also logged their driving practice hours on the team tally board as they built up to 120 hours practice and ultimately, getting their license."
"The winning teams were acknowledged for their enthusiasm for the L120 Program, in some cases going over and above requirements to engage their community in road safety activities," Ms Cockfield said.
Gippsland Power held two driver training sessions, engaging in the ‘Keys Please’ program and coordinating 140 people to drive to a game together.
Most Power players achieved their L plates and worked on their driving practice. They were made an informative fatigue video with Lavalla College, Traralgon.
Most of the players at the Northern Knights achieved their learner permit and together they produced an outstanding commercial on the topic ‘120 hours practice in all conditions’.
The Northern Knights also actively contributed to all TAC Cup programs, including attracting a high number of friend registrations to the Vanessa Myspace website.
The North Ballarat Rebels participated in three separate driver sessions dealing with peer group pressure and accepting responsibility for your actions on the roads.
The Rebels took a road trip out to the Warrnambool races where they helped the TAC breath-test race goers and created awareness of drink driving throughout the local community.
Five teams were highly commended for their efforts and won $500 for their club. These were the Dandenong Stingrays, Western Jets, Geelong Falcons, Calder Cannons and the Bendigo Pioneers.
