Well
the time had come for the biggest game of the year “The Grand Final’, it was between
the best two teams in Div 3; Aspley Hornets and Redcliffe Tigers. Reevesie had them in the change rooms trying
to settle the boy’s nerves. He chatted
about all the things we talked about all year. He read a very emotional letter he received
from ET. It talked about all the things
our team had worked on:

Attitude
Hard ball gets
One percenters
Scoreboard Pressure
The
boys ran through a great banner built by the MOTHs (Mothers Of The Hornets).
The Main theme:
“IF IT IS TO BE IT IS
UP TO ME”
The
wind was blowing from the north and Paddy lost the toss and we were kicking
against the wind. The first quarter was always going to be a hard physical
tussle. We won the clearance and got the ball forward. Redcliffe cleared and it
was played between the fifties. Our midfield Adam, Paddy, Parky and Alex were
working hard around the ground getting the clearances. Reevesie wanted the boys
to lock it up and play on the dead side. We got the ball forward on occasions
but could not convert. The first score came by Lockie Nicholls mark and miss. It
was a great quarter by both teams and there was only one point scored by us. As
Reevesie asked the boys, they locked it down and did not give them a chance to
use the wind.
Reevesie
asked the boys to open the flood gates this quarter and apply the scoreboard
pressure. After some great play in the middle Zane stepped a couple of players
and pumped the ball forward to a running Jackson who had a shot and missed.
Then ET got the ball out side fifty and was off running, running, running oops too
far. Skull got the ball in the fifty run, run and run, another miss the boys
were on fire but could not convert. The ball was being forced out of our fifty
by the Tigers, however our wall was working over time and we kept pumping it
straight back in. Jackson finally got on the end of one and converted from the
pocket. Woo Hoo first goal. This opened the flood gates. Next bounce the centre
men got it forward, Kelley put his head over the ball and was rewarded with a
free kick 25 metre. “Goal”
In
the next centre bounce, Adam tapped to Andy, Andy hand passed back to Adam he
pumped it deep in the forward line to a running Zane who converted, a great
running play. Next bounce it was pumped deep Bradley and the boys toiled until
it was pumped out the back and Bradley turned a Redcliffe player inside out to
get his regular goal. It was a game
winning quarter by the Hornets, they showed the Tigers a clean set of heels.
Half
time: Hornets 4 – 4: 30 to Tigers one point.
The
premiership quarter was going to be tough; Redcliffe had the wind and would
come out hard. Reevesie again asked the
boys to play the dead wing and lock up the game. We worked hard but Redcliffe worked the ball
forward with long kicks. The forward thrusts were being stopped by our back fantastic
six! Lockie Nichols with his vice like
hands (he must have had 10 marks for the quarter), the never say die Dylan
Arthur, the big bustling half back Dan Fischle, the last line rock JJ Curry,
the centre half forward killer Angus East and finally the leader of the backs
Broady Broad. They worked together very well this year and no team really got
on top of them and today was not going to be the day. Mid way through the third
quarter Redcliffe got their first (and only) goal. We did not score, however we
achieved our goal of going into the last quarter (with the wind) in front.
Reevesie
wanted us to finish hard, but not let the game go! We worked the ball forward to our goal hungry
forwards; the hard leading full forward Sean McArdle, the three pocket rockets
Jackson Zande, ET Lawrence and Jordy Cabot, the little terrier and goal thief
Cody Bailey, Bradley Bates “you need a goal give it to me”, the new Bird Man,
Kelley McKee-Bannon (after Bird Man Burton from Adelaide), the blazing green
boots of Zane Kent. We had lots of shots and controlled the game; the Tiger’s
did not look like scoring. We fought the game out till the end and took all the
punishment that Redcliffe could dish out. Our on-ballers and link up players,
controlled the middle of the ground. What an effort by our two ruckman Lockie
Fuller and Adam Faulkner, the never say die hard men on the ball Alex Laube and
Andrew Parkinson, the run/run/run wingmen Lochie ‘Skull’ Braunlein, cross
country specialist Luke Nicholls and the quite achiever Connor “Humphrey” McCallum,
and let’s not forget our illustrious leader Paddy Podbury. In the last quarter
we kicked six points, however we controlled the quarter.
Final
Score: Hornets 4 – 10: 40 – Tigers 1 – 3: 9
All
the boys played a great game and each of them had a huge part in the win. They
played Reevesie’s game plan to perfection. Our sensational 2nd quarter when we kicked 4 goals with the wind
set the game up. I am glad I did not
have to pick the man of the match because our boys played as a team and
supported each other all the way. Although Reevesie did give specific roles to
four of the players; Angus East (CHB), Reevesie said, “Angus I do not care if
you do not get a kick as long as your opposition doesn’t”. A great game
Angus. Alex Laube (Midfield) “Tag their
No 1 Alex”, he did (did you see the stomp?) and Alex still got many possessions
running off his player, Fantastic. “Parky
and Adam play a kick behind the game and stop the opposition thrusts forward”. Played to perfection both sensational. It was a great year with the team playing for
each other. I don’t know who was more
relieved and happy, the boys or the parents. It was a great day.
Goals: Jackson
Zande, Kelley McKee-Bannon, Zane Kent and Bradley Bates.
AFL BJ Man of the
Match:
Zane Kent.
Congratulations
Hornets.
