Rain, storms and saturated grounds led to some low-scoring, tough encounters in Round 9 of the Premier Reserves.
Scores were tied at 1.4 apiece at thee quarter time at AH Capp Reserve, with the MUGARS recovering from a scoreless first half to catch up to the Falcons. But a dominant Darebin outfit made the most of their chances in the final quarter, kicking two goals-to-none to win by the same margin. Alanna Porter and Victoria Pettit continued their fine form for the Falcons, while Tenille Rollnik and Rhiannon Coulson battled hard for the Uni girls.
Diamond Creek launched an astonishing comeback to beat St Kilda by 11 points at Plenty War Memorial Park. Caroline Kilmartin kicked two goals for the Creekers, while Lisa Dower and Courtney Merbis were influential after their side was held goalless in the first half. The Saints were again well served by Jenny Male, and she found support in Kelsey Canuto and Sara Drew.
While the Spurs’ senior side recorded its first win, the reserves could not follow suit – although it was one of their more competitive outings for six weeks. However, the Hawks, led by Christie Vassallo, were too strong on their way to a 52-point win. They kicked out to a four-goal lead early and extended that margin narrowly at every change. Natalie Vandort also starred for Berwick with two goals, with Stacy Szalay VU St Albans’ best.
All teams have the week off due to the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Next weekend, Darebin hosts the Spurs, the Devils travel out to Berwick and Diamond Creek has the bye. In the game of the round, the MUGARS (3rd) and Saints (5th) will do battle, with the result likely to impact the top four.
