Souths Deliver Double Digit Win

Souths United

Words: Michael Flynn

Souths United Women issued a warning to their league rivals with a 10-0 hammering of Peninsula Power Women at A.J.Kelly Park.

Meaghan McElligott ran riot to net five goals for the visitors, while Deeanna Thompson also proved ruthless in recording her second straight hat-trick to start the season.

Georgia Chapman and Georgia Keen also chimed in with a goal apiece as the hosts were outclassed by Souths’ bevy of impressive off-season recruits.

The ten goal haul sets a raft of club records for Souths in PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Women’s competition – including most goals in a game and largest winning margin, while McElligott’s haul is the most by a single player for Souths in the league.

The win is also Souths first ever away from home in the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Women’s competition.

What They Said

“It’s a disappointing result for sure. No one likes to lose to a hatful of goals. There are a few positives to take out of it. The first 20 minutes and quite a lot of the first half it was quite a close game and very even. But they got on top of us physically. They have a more mature girls and a few more experienced girls than us and the game ran away from us in the second half.” – Michael Cook, Peninsula Power FC Women coach

“It’s funny because three weeks ago we were struggling for players. But all of a sudden now we have added some new additions to the team and strengthened the team up now. There’s a bit of competition for places now, which is great.“ – Gary French, Souths United FC Women coach
