FQPL Round six review: Teams patch up defences

Another round of the FQPL was marred by wet weather over the weekend, which saw a number of fixtures postponed. This round didn’t quite see the big scores of round five, but there was plenty of action and no lack of talking points.

Wide Bay Buccaneers | 1 – 4 | Logan Lightning FC

Lightning Strikes in Bundaberg

Logan Lightning picked up an important three points, their first since round two against Wolves. It was an impressive performance from the away side, who came from behind early to ultimately run away with the match. Brad Mitchell put The Buccaneers in front within the first ten minutes, however, the Bucc’s conceded an own goal and things were level only minutes later. The visitors upped the intensity, and their ability to control the game in the front third was a reward when Stephan Green and Richard Greer both found the back of the net within four minutes of each other.

Wide Bay tried valiantly to find their way back into the match, but when Logan put another on the board in the later stages of the second half, it was all over. Some early warning signs emerging for Wide Bay who are still yet to grab a point this season, and have conceded 22 goals in just four games. Another tough week ahead for The Buccaneers with a trip down south to take on league leaders, and currently undefeated, Peninsula Power. Will we see an upset?

Rochedale Rovers | 1 – 0 | Mitchelton FC
Underwood Park

Rover’s edge out Mitchelton

Rochedale Rovers got back to winning ways over the weekend with a gutsy display over Mitchelton FC. It was a tough match in difficult conditions, in a round riddled with postponement due to rain.  The two teams were deadlocked for the majority of the match with plenty of chances at both ends, however neither able to capitalise.

The separation came in the 84th minute through super-sub Tomas Ross, who fired the ball into the back of the net after getting on the end of a ball whipped in with pace. Mitchelton did their best to get something from the match. Mitchelton had a shot cleared off the goal-line and the intensity of the final ten minutes was something else, but much to the delight of the home fans, it was the Rovers who emerged victorious.

Ipswich Knights | 0 – 2 | Capalaba Bulldogs
Eric Evans Oval

Bulldogs take down The Knights

Capalaba Bulldogs made it three in a row over the weekend with an impressive away performance against Ipswich Knights. A solid first half performance across the board was enough to seal an important three points on the road, making it four wins from five matches.

The account opened in the 21st minute, and doubled in the 43rd as Capalaba held a comfortable buffer heading into the break. The same dominance remained in the second half however the visitors were unable to capitalise further. It was a better defensive effort in the second half from Ipswich, who have now conceded eight unanswered goals in their last two matches.

The victory puts The Bulldogs comfortably in the top four, and sets the scene for an enthralling clash in round seven against Souths United, who return from their BYE.
