SWQ Thunder conceded four goals or more for the third straight round as Brisbane Roar Youth ran riot in a 5-1 win at Clive Berghofer Stadium.

Dylan Wenzel-Halls netted a hattrick to help Josh McCloughan’s side overcome a first-half equaliser and improve their winning run to four matches.

Thunder poacher Mustafa Jafari cancelled out Wenzel-Halls’ early opener with a well-taken finish in the 16th minute, but Young Roar quickly responded through Daniel Driver’s fortuitous deflected finish.

Daniel Leck stretched the away side’s advantage to 3-1 by half-time before Wenzel-Halls rounded out the comfortable four-goal rout with two more inside the final 20 minutes.

Young Roar will aim to make it five on the spin at home to Sunshine Coast on Saturday while Thunder’s third straight defeat keeps them in 10th ahead of Brisbane Strikers’ visit.

What They Said

“We experimented with a few young boys because we’ve got a lot of injuries from the weekend and a few suspensions. It was an opportunity to step who could step up to the next level. At the end of the day, the effort from some of the young boys was the big thing. They stood out.” – Michael Turvey, SWQ Thunder FC assistant coach.

“In the second half, just the way we pressed really tired South West out so that’s why we got the result in the end. Our wingers gave a lot of hard work, a lot of good balls in … and I think we were pretty solid at the back. Just an all-round good team performance.” – Cameron Crestani, Brisbane Roar FC Youth captain.
