Souths United Women produced a stunning final half hour to emphatically end Gold Coast City Women’s unbeaten run in a 9-0 shock at Wakerley Park.

The hosts incredibly piled on all nine of their goals in the closing 30 minutes of the match after the visitors held firm for the opening hour.

City goalkeeper Sarah McDonald kept her side in the match in the opening 45 minutes but was powerless to prevent Souths from running over the top of the away side.

Deeanna Thompson and Meaghan McElligott both hit hattricks against their old side while Ayesha Norrie grabbed two as Souths made it six wins from eight.

The result snaps City’s seven-game unbeaten streak and keeps them two points shy of fourth-placed Eastern Suburbs Women.

What They Said

“The whole team played well, the whole squad actually. The girls that came on made a huge contribution. We knew it was going to be a hard game. Obviously we’ve scored the goals now but (in) that first half we really had to work hard.” – Gary French, Souths United FC Women coach.

“We did really well in the first half. The girls gave everything and we held our own. In the second half I think we got a little bit tired and Souths took control of the game at that point. Not by a country mile (does the scoreline reflect the contest) but that’s what it was so we have to live with it.” – David Thompson, Gold Coast City FC Women coach.
