Thunder Women Keen To Maintain Confidence

SWQ Thunder

Words: Matt Dorman

New SWQ Thunder Women’s coach Keren Thomas says spirits are soaring ahead of the Toowoomba team’s opening fixture of pre-season this weekend.

Thomas takes charge of her first match in the role when Western Pride Women visit Gatton on Saturday afternoon.

Taking on the role after Thunder finished ninth in 2015, the former Football Queensland Female Coach of the Year is relishing the step-up to the PlayStation® 4 National Premier Leagues Women’s competition.

“It’s exciting and it’s new and it’s possibly unknown for us as well,” Thomas said.

“Training has been great so far. The girls are really enthusiastic and happy which is obviously where we all are at the beginning of the year!

“If we can carry that momentum through that we would be great.”

Another confirmed new face for Thunder is goalkeeper Elizabeth Hollitt, who joins from Tenterfield Soccer Club.

The former Football Stanthorpe Most Consistent Ladies’ player is likely to start at the front of a three-player queue for the number one spot in 2016.

However, Thomas said her side’s emphasis for the Pride friendly is on protecting possession.

“We’re working on possession mostly at training so that’s our focus for the game,” she said.

“In general it’s our first run together and there are some new girls in there so we’ll be looking at positions to see what fits best with whom.

“Then just looking at the girls understanding how we want to play, other than keeping possession.”
