Western Pride Women recovered from an early deficit to end their season with an 8-1 win over Moreton Bay United Women at Briggs Road Complex on Sunday.

Rose Nisbet put the visitors ahead midway through the first half, but Pride improved to lead by two goals at the break and piled on five more after the restart as Jets finished with eight players.

Capturing at least a point would have been enough for Jets to avoid finishing bottom and they appeared on track when the in-form Nisbet opened the scoring in the 22nd minute.

However, Pride hit back late in the half with three goals in the space of six minutes to break clear.

Kara Mowbray first netted a quickfire brace to take her tally to five in four games, before player-coach Lorena Maggio added the buffer shortly before half-time.

The teams fought out nearly 20 goalless minutes after the resumption but Jets’ dwindling number of fit players allowed the home side to dominate the latter stages.

Courtney Bascunan, who scored in the reverse fixture earlier in the month, eventually broke through for Pride’s fourth just after the hour.

Maggio then increased her haul to a hattrick with two goals in a matter of minutes to hand the hosts a 6-1 lead.

The final 10 minutes again belonged to Mowbray as she grabbed two more to make it four for the match and seven across the season.

Pride’s victory means the Ipswich side concludes their campaign in eighth with six wins and a draw, while Jets slip back below Souths United Women in the final standings.

Speaking after the match, Pride goalkeeper Alicia Brown said she was pleased to end the season on a high.

“It was unlucky to concede early but the girls hit back strong and that was great,” the 18-year-old said.

Jets coach Gary Ward looked ahead to next season with hope, pointing to the promise of junior and youth players as a positive.

“It’s about recruiting and building because the future looks bright for the club. We’ve got a solid base,” Ward said.
