Redlands United and Brisbane Roar Youth fought out the first 0-0 draw of the PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland season at Cleveland Showgrounds on Friday night.

The visitors were unable to capitalise on their monopoly of possession in a result that does little to alter the ladder positions of either side.

Lyndon Dykes was prominent for the Red Devils early but could only shoot straight at Fraser Chalmers in the fifth minute.

James Donnelly was also unable to beat Chalmers after connecting with Graham Fyfe’s free kick.

Despite allowing Young Roar to dictate possession, the hosts created a greater number of openings on the counter attack in the first half without making the opportunities count.

Defender Donnelly could have been punished for a poor clearance shortly after the restart but Conor O’Neill shot over the crossbar.

Stephen O’Neill then went close after losing his defender with some neat footwork, before forcing a low save from Brendan White on the hour.

Bechar was next to shoot narrowly over as Chalmers confidently dealt with any forays into his area.

Graham Fyfe’s side were beginning to look the more likely to snatch a winner but neither side succeeded in breaking the deadlock, with a point apiece extending both teams’ unbeaten runs three matches.

Speaking after the match, Red Devils midfielder Zach Graveson praised his teammates’ collective effort to deny the visitors.

“We knew if we kept our discipline in defence we would frustrate them. I thought we did that tonight and I think the scoreline shows that,” Graveson said.

Young Roar coach John Sime commended the performance of 20-year-old goalkeeper Chalmers.

“For all the possession we did have, Redlands created a couple of good chances and could have come away with a 2-0 result. But Fraser pulled a few saves out of the bag … I thought his performance was quite solid and I was quite happy with him,” Sime said.
