Thunder No Cakewalk For Strikers

Words: Steve Pitman & Michael Flynn

Brisbane Strikers coach Kevin A’herne-Evans won’t let his players ease off against cellar-dwellers SWQ Thunder in Saturday night's 'Lightning Bolt Derby'.

Strikers currently sit second in the league standings whilst Thunder are still searching for their first PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland win since joining the competition in 2014.

However, despite the teams sitting at opposite ends of the table, A’herne-Evans promises his side won’t take their opposition lightly in the Round 10 clash dubbed the 'Lightning Bolt Derby' due to the similar design of both club's badges.

“Our approach doesn’t change for whoever we play,” A’Herne-Evans said.

“It’s the same preparation throughout the week, it’s the same amount of analysis that goes on for every team we play and we like to get a plan sorted by the end of the week.”

He added, “What comes into our consideration is in-depth analysis of whatever they’ve been doing or aiming to do in a game and then we look to build a plan from our team model to get us a victory.”

Thunder are coming off their first competitive win of 2015 after seeing off third-tier community club West Wanderers in Westfield FFA Cup South West Queensland Zone Qualifying on Wednesday night.

Strikers have their own cup date midweek against league-leaders Moreton Bay United, but A’herne-Evans said this won’t cloud his squad selection on Saturday night.

“At this moment in time I don’t predict a big changeover in personnel from the team that played against Palm Beach (last week),” he said.

“It’s been a disruptive month in terms of playing games, then having a break, and then playing a Cup game and no weekend game after that - what’s important is that we get continuity among the key players again, especially with a big (Westfield FFA Cup) game coming up.”

“They’ll want to make sure that they put in a big performance on the weekend and that’s where group is at, at the moment. The squad is so strong that they know they have to do all they can to stay in the team,” he concluded.
