Roar W-League Edge Out UQFC

Words: Michael Flynn & Craig Pilon

UQFC Women battled to the end but ultimately succumbed 2-0 in a friendly match against Brisbane Roar W-League at University of Queensland Field Five on Wednesday night.

Roar W-League’s Maili Forbes continued her pre-season form with the opening goal before Sunny Franco added the second shortly after to round out the scoring against a UQFC Women's side that currently sits top of the PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland league standings.

Boasted by returning Matildas star Tameka Butt as well Kim Carroll and Brooke Spence in their line-up, Roar W-League had the better of the early opportunities, finding space and time on the flanks.

Despite the early pressure, UQFC Women held firm until an error from goalkeeper Dani Harbot allowed Forbes a simple tap-in just before the quarter hour.

Roar W-League continued to assert themselves on the contest and doubled their advantage shortly after on the back of solid build-up from Butt and Angela Beard - Franco on hand to steer home the finish from six yards.

Forbes was denied her second of the match after striking the crossbar later in the half from a well-delivered cut-back.

Buoyed by a 200 strong home crowd, UQFC Women found their feet in the second-half as Katie Winter and Lulu Pullar began to click in midfield, while PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland golden boot contender Greta Bodey began to threaten in the final third.

As the half progressed Bodey arguably fashioned the host’s best chance of the contest after forcing a sharp save from Roar W-League goalkeeper Teagen Micah with an angled left-footed strike.

UQFC finished strongly but their frustrations in front of goal continued - a late free-kick from Emma Pittman striking the crossbar only for the rebound to elude both the the lurking Chloe Williams and Winter.

UQFC Women return to PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland action against the undefeated Palm Beach SC Women at Mallawa Complex this Sunday.
