Sibling Rivalry Pays Off For Piddicks

Their two teams don’t meet until Round 10 but the banter has already begun between brothers and PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland coaches Grae and Adam Piddick.

Younger sibling Adam, 30, is guiding the high-flying Moreton Bay United in his first season at senior level after watching Grae lead Palm Beach SC to the double in his first season in charge.

Despite his Jets topping the league after three rounds, the former Brisbane Strikers Youth Men’s coach hasn’t had a chance to live down his brother’s dual triumphs.

“He always brings it up,” Adam said.

“When I was at Strikers last year he played every team after we did and I helped him out with a little bit of information on the opposition, so I’m always saying half that trophy is mine anyway.”

Sharks also reached the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16 in a breakout campaign for the club and Adam is targeting similar success for his promising Jets side this season.

“That should be the goal for every team and it’s no different for us,” he said.

“Obviously it’s even better with Grae being my brother and what he achieved last year. We as a club are striving to match that.”

Despite his personal success on the sideline, Grae hasn’t quickly forgotten an incident from the pair's playing days.

The pair both came through Redlands United’s junior system before meeting again on opposing sides at senior level in a heated match between The Red Devils and Grae’s then-team Capalaba FC.

“He stopped a headed goal from me with his hands and got away with it! That one sticks in my mind,” he recalled.

"He stuck his hand out to stop the ball and somehow the referee missed it to stop me scoring a goal.

"It was in a derby so it would have been good to score but he managed to stop me and he got away with it."

Adam concedes being outmuscled and – unintentionally – impeding a “cracking header.”

“I pretty much stopped it with my arm but the referee waved play on and he was blowing up,” Adam laughs.

"At that time there was a massive rivalry between Capalaba and Redlands. I think we were 1-0 up and I was marking him at a corner, he was too strong and got the better of me."

Though Grae jokes he and older brother Daniel picked on Adam, the younger sibling reckons their competitive but close relationship has helped them succeed.

“Pretty much in everything we do we’re looking to challenge each other, which is good because it makes us better people, better players and hopefully better coaches as well,” Adam concluded.
