Palm Beach SC have made a strong pre-season statement with a 3-1 win over an in-form Sunshine Coast FC in the Macron Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Sharks led 3-0 at A.J. Kelly Park before Fire found a late consolation, a goal which could prove crucial in qualifying for the tournament final.

Forward Daniel Grzic handed Sharks an early lead to extend his pre-season goalscoring run to four goals in six games.

Grzic’s goal ensured the PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland Champions led 1-0 at the break, before substitute Julian Matthews extended the advantage midway through the second half with his second in two games.

Ethan Grimley sealed the result shortly after Matthews’ effort by making it 3-0 it for Grae Piddick’s side, despite Rhys Roberts pulling one back for Fire in the 78th minute.

While Roberts’ goal failed to inspire a turnaround, it did keep Sunshine Coast ahead of their opposition on goals scored in Group A of the Macron Cup.

Fire could now compete in next Saturday’s final depending on results elsewhere, while Sharks are scheduled to next meet Broadbeach in a friendly on 21 February.

Sunshine Coast FC 1 (Rhys ROBERTS 78')
Palm Beach SC 3 (Daniel GRZIC 8', Julian MATTHEWS 64', Ethan GRIMLEY 75')
