Thunder Fall In Pre-Season Opener

Words: Michael Flynn

South West Queensland Thunder were defeated 1-0 by Ipswich Knights in their first pre-season hit-out of 2015 at Stan McCrea Field on Saturday.

Knights’ Japanese recruit Taiga Ishikura scored the match’s only goal on 15 minutes for the Brisbane Premier League side.

With no signings yet confirmed for the 2015 season, new Thunder coach Chris Wilkes ran the rule over a range of triallists in the match as he seeks to improve on the club’s last placed finish in the 2014 PS4 NPL Queensland season.

2014 campaigners Tom Fanning, Jack Percy, Jacob Bigby and goalkeeper Jace Hudson all started the match for Thunder, as did former Western Pride player and South West region junior Keagan Sheridan.

Thunder are scheduled to return to Ipswich next weekend as they continue their pre-season preparations against Pride - the same club they will face in the opening round of the PS4 NPL Queensland season on February 28.
