UQFC Is Good Sports Club Of The Year

University of Queensland FC have been awarded the Queensland Good Sports Club of the Year honour.
Good Sports is a community programme by the Australian Drug Foundation and provides free support to sporting clubs to change their culture and reduce high risk drinking through alcohol management standards.
UQFC has taken a number of steps to ensure it has a healthier relationship with alcohol and food, and gives more back to the community.
The committee has implemented a smoke free policy, safe transport policy at the senior ground and an alcohol policy for senior games.
Free soft drinks are now offered at events as a reward for drivers who don’t drink in order to drive mates or family home safely.
The club was also named as a national finalist for the inaugural Good Sports Healthy Eating Award.
Junior canteen staff members have been trained in safe food handling, while healthy eating has been encouraged through posters and a new menu.
UQFC was recently announced by Football Queensland as one of twelve inaugural PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland Women’s license holders, with the competition set to kick-off in 2015.
The club also fields Senior Mens and Boys teams in community competitions run by Football Brisbane.
Club President David Smith told the club’s official website, “This award is an acknowledgement of the concerted effort and engagement of our club and its members towards getting the vital message across.”
“Healthy choices really do make for stronger communities. Our club is undoubtedly stronger and more united for having participated in the Good Sports program and we are committed to its future continuance.”
Football Queensland Chief Operating Officer Ben Mannion congratulated UQFC on their award.
“It is pleasing to see a club that is preparing to make their debut in the Women’s National Premier Leagues Queensland receive such an award,” he said.
The Good Sports programme operates nationally, involves over 5000 community sporting clubs and reaches over 1.5 million Australians.
